Yeah but the decisions he’s got right has mostly been non-football related. He is after all a banker, not a football expert. A strong director of football should do most of the work when recruiting a manager IMO.
I’d like the double pivot but in a 4231 you want two real wingers. I still doubt Coutinho and Buendia will function together, as they have the same role on the pitch being the main playmaker high up.
The 6 big clubs don’t look like changing anytime soon (could change of course). The Prem is the most attractive league to work in and all the money is here. Villa have possibly the richest owners, and one of the best squads, outside the big 6.
A couple of hunches? He thought SG was destined to be a top manager already when he was at Liverpool, and he (Purslow) is a self described ”fanatical Liverpool fan”. As for famous players he also tried to appoint Thierry Henry
Purslow picking the replacement is the scary part for me. It would most likely be another English manager, a well known ex-player and preferrably with some Liverpool connections.
Exactly. We’ve under NSWE tried two different managers, none of whom had any experience from a big league in Europe. It’s very possible none of them are that good.
He’s kicked water bottles twice. First against Arsenal with Smith in charge and then when subbed against Man U under Gerrard. Maybe he just hates water bottles.
If Villa struggle this season, he’ll have a hard time recruiting players. Few will want to come to a club in trouble, no matter how legendary the manager was back when he still played.
Define dominate the middle? Today Villa had the majority of possession, we had the ball in the middle a lot. The main problem was we couldn’t progress in control and create good chances.
With someone who is composed and solid in possession beside Kamara, there would be room for Ramsey to play a bit more risky. But McGinn and Ramsey together doesn’t work.
Are they really? Coutinho and Buendia are tiny, and Archer. The others can’t be excused with being small.
Our biggest player was on the bench however, Mings would have been useful at their second goal.
Yes but one player isn’t always enough. With Ramsey and McGinn the midfield is still very attack minded. Kamara could end up being as lonely as Luiz was a lot of the time last season, even if he’s better equipped to deal with it.
I agree this is where Villa have to improve. Not sure physicality is the key though, good technique (and composure) seems a safer way to keep the ball within the team.
Interesting to see Cucurella going to Chelsea for £56m plus £7m in potential add-ons. He's the same age as Cash and they have a similar energetic style. While Cucurella is good I'm not convinced he's any better than Cash.
Of course there are better strikers out there (just as there are better players than VIlla's in every position).
What is annoying is when people demand we sign a 25 goal striker, or at least a 20 goal striker. If we're talking about the Prem they hardly exist anymore. Goals are shared around the team these days.
