  1. Football is an industry with huge money involved. Players and managers are either media trained, or advised to say certain things by agents and clubs. The media coverage is intense and everyone wants to paint a good picture of themselves to further their career. No one says what they actually think. Even when playing FIFA career mode, you learn to say the ”correct” cliches in post game interviews. tl;dr It’s all just empty words
  2. Identifying the true leaders (not always the loudest) seems crucial for a new manager arriving. Tuchel apparently made the call more or less the first day at Chelsea. When it’s done, things can move forward and there doesn’t have to be much fuss about it. Gerrard has seemed to almost enjoy creating power struggles, questioning Mings in the spring and then waiting months before demoting him, bringing things up in public. Immature or just stupid? Or maybe anything to avoid focus on tactics, which doesn’t appear to interest him.
  3. If Villa finally appoint a real manager I’d expect all of them to be shown the door. Gerrard keeping a number of them was strange and a worrying sign.
  4. Purslow making football related decisions will always be a problem. What we can hope for is that he picks a good manager by accident next time.
  5. Were they? They were at 7th for so long. That’s them already out then.
  6. Wolves, to begin with. There is no top 7 or top 8. There are 6 big clubs, and a whole lot of midtable teams aiming for Europe.
  7. My guess is he isn’t too happy at the moment. Being made captain adds pressure, and him being Gerrard’s favourite makes people negative against him when things go wrong (which may be a bit unfair).
  8. We’re the anti Brighton. They sign players for 5m, let Potter coach them for a while and sell on for 50m
  9. The money might convince him. Not his own salary, but the money the owners have shown they’re ready to spend on the team.
  10. I agree! Just saying that older players on high wages can be more difficult to shift. Conte loves experienced players, the clubs he works for tend to be left with a small legion of them.
  11. We most likely won’t and it’s probably reasonable to give him some games of the new season. Still, a manager’s time in charge doesn’t reset to zero at the start of every season. He’s been at Villa for 9 months and two transfer windows.
  12. That’s true for most players, but doesn’t count in relation to transfer values and potential resales. Around 29/30 years players’ transfer values drop sharply.
  13. At the start of last season there was a lot of talk about McGinn having changed the way he eats and trains and that he was fitter than before. I thought so too, he looked healthier and seemed quicker. Does he look worse again now, or am I being influenced by the general negative view of him at the moment?
  14. He’s been here 29 games so far. If Coutinho was signed as a personal gift to Gerrard, that’s stupid. If it means we have to keep Gerrard so as not to upset Coutinho, that’s even more stupid. Gerrard has been allowed by Purslow to sign older players and give them higher wages. That means results must come immediately, if they don’t we’ll turn into Everton very quickly.
  15. They’re both correct, Transfermarkt includes the cup loss against Man U.
  16. Also worth to remember which division the results came in, Bruce (and to some extent Smith) looks more successful after managing in the championship.
  17. Likely yes. People have been asking for a DM for years, now we have a good one but it still doesn’t solve our midfield problems when the set-up is this way.
  18. Gerrard arriving with Beale as his mastermind was worrying me already back then. Coaches having different strengths sounds good in theory, but I’d still like the main man to have clear ideas of his own about how to set up a team. Gerrard taking a coordinator role as manager makes him look a bit like a shell to me, a well known name and face.
  19. Villa have been relatively poor against a variety of teams I think, but we seem to struggle the most against teams that sit back deep. Villa are completely helpless when facing a low block. There’s no meaningful running to move the opposition around, only aimless crosses into the box, aimed at no-one. It was exactly the same in those back to back defeats to Watford and Newcastle under SG last season.
  20. No, they’re not mates. As you say, they’re different ages and with very different backgrounds. Purslow and his family are from Merseyside and huge Liverpool fans. CP always had a season ticket at Anfield. Gerrard, as a club icon, is not surprisingly Purslow’s idol. He thinks Gerrard is an incredible personality and destined for great things. What Gerrard thinks about it I don’t know, but having Purslow as an admirer can of course be beneficial career wise.
  21. I still like that idea of them signing McGinn for 50-60m.
  22. Yeah, if he was allowed to keep his best players. But he keeps developing new ones every season, before selling them for 50m.
  23. Man U are probably better than last season but not enough to beat Brighton it seems. Potter teaching Ten Hag a lesson just like he did with Ole and Ralf. Love it.
  24. Potter would be fantastic but hard to get. He gets to run Brighton exactly how he wants and seems comfortable there. Also seems destined for the England job, the poor man.
