  1. Purslow as part owner will stay unless he has a fallout with the main owners and they decide to buy him out. He seems to be a very good ceo as long as he concentrates on increasing commercial revenue, brand awareness and so on. Football decisions like finding a manager should mostly be a job for the sporting director, since Purslow is a banker and no football expert.
  2. ”I love Tyrone Mings, I love the person, the character, the player.” https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/i-love-person-steven-gerrard-22454460.amp
  3. The Gerrard signings will be as eager as the others to play in a well functioning, successful team. If the atmosphere in the team is negative and Villa play badly, they’ll be as happy as us to see a new manager come in.
  4. He wouldn’t play a minute under SG so a loan is at least better than paying him to train with the kids. Wonderful player (in small portions)
  5. Yes, but in Pochettino’s case he wouldn’t have to be successful at Villa first to get calls from other clubs. He’s already proven so to say.
  6. Speaking of Benitez, that’s one manager Villa would never appoint as long as Purslow is still at the club. They had a famous feud going on at Liverpool when they both were there. Purslow finally drove him out. https://amp.theguardian.com/football/2010/jun/25/rafael-benitez-christain-purslow-liverpool-exit
  7. Pochettino could be great, but he’s in that celebrity manager category where you would worry about him leaving anytime for a better gig. You don’t want the manager to feel like he’s doing the club a favour by being there. It’s a fine line though and maybe he’s more down to earth than I think.
  8. The worst thing imo is that player selection is only part of the problem. His whole team setup is badly flawed, we often seem to be lacking a game plan and what’s worse, we have no basic but functional way of playing to turn back to if/when things go wrong. The players actually look lost, like they’re being sent out on the pitch to improvise with the sole instruction of ”go and win this one lads”.
  9. There’s a risk he’ll miss it anyway as he was dropped by Southgate before being dropped by Gerrard, but Mings would obviously at least want to fight for it.
  10. Traore as captain could have been pretty great though.
  11. At least they’re hard to beat in a pretty way, so to speak, dominating possession to stay out of danger. And with better attacking players maybe that high xG could become goals at least sometimes?
  12. For a manager to really get where he wants to go it takes time, yes. But when a really good manager takes over a team you can usually see changes pretty quickly. Looking at some currnent PL managers, when Conte came to Spurs he first had a couple of shaky months but then they were on their way. Howe at Newcastle started to click after less than two months. Potter changed Brighton’s style of playing right away, results took a little while to improve but the tactical overhaul was visible from the start. Vieira also changed his team’s style over a summer and got decent results from day one. Tuchel fixed Chelsea’s defence in a couple of weeks. A manager who knows what he’s doing doesn’t need years to implement a style and basic philosophy. He may need money and transfer windows to get things how he wants them, but the direction should be clear from the start.
  13. You said some fan favourites aren’t what we need. Which ones then?
  14. You mean we need Gerrard to say we don’t need Buendia and Sanson, who seem to be the current fan favourites? What difference would that do, they’re rarely playing anyway.
  15. The web editor has been reading the room. Players smiling now would only make fans furious, so those pics weren’t used today.
  16. That’s what I believe too. Without a new manager I see us finishing behind even clubs like Everton and Leeds. The worst thing is that the current owners are almost like winning the lottery, rich and willing to invest. But their patience won’t be unlimited and I fear another shit season, and having to restart with another manager, could make them lose interest. Such a wasted opportunity if that were to happen.
  17. They probably avoided giving him that kind of salary by paying him a large sign-on bonus instead. We won’t know how much, but that way his weekly wages was likely brought down to 120k or so and the wage structure was somewhat intact, while Kamara still gets his money.
  18. The Athletic recently made a light-hearted ”Managerial moan index”, ranking which managers make the most excuses when losing. Gerrard was mid-table there, but when looking at different types of excuses he stood out as the manager most likely to blame his players. ”This category only addresses an attempt by a manager to absolve themselves of responsibility, whether that is by 1) claiming their squad had failed to follow instructions, or 2) pointing to an individual mistake which cost their side the game. Particularly fond of this reason is Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, who blamed his players in approximately half of his excuses.” https://theathletic.com/3462546/2022/08/04/premier-league-manager-excuses/?source=user_shared_article
  19. Exactly. This is IMO an argument why it can be smart to play down the importance of captaincy the way a lot of clubs in Europe do, and managers like Pep and Klopp letting the players decide. By elevating the importance of captaincy you’ll be more likely to end up in pointless drama like this.
  20. Those depressing passing stats for McGinn and Ramsey is a consequence of them playing with such high risk. Villa are usually impatient and take the difficult passing option over the safe one. McGinn does it all the time with his passing, Ramsey likes to try a quick 1-2 and go on a run, Buendia also plays smart but risky. This means Villa’s possession sequences are often cut short.
  21. They’re at least right about the fanbases. Lampard still seems popular with Everton fans (why I do not know) and will most likely stay longer than SG.
  22. Most if not all Premier League sackings this season will be made at the beginning of international breaks. The first opportunity is after the Southampton game on September 26th. The next is at the start of the World Cup break, after the Brighton game on November 12th.
  23. Ramsey to me seems to be one of Gerrard’s favourites, which is reasonable since he is such a great talent. The problem IMO is that because SG loves McGinn and Ramsey, they end up playing together most games despite being a bad midfield combination.
  24. Agree 100%. Ings is a fine player but not used to being a lone striker. Also starting to look like a relatively old 30 year old, when it comes to pace and stamina.
  25. Are you sure? Remember transfer fees in and out are only one part, Villa’s wage bill has by all accounts increased massively this year. From having one player over 100k (Ings), we now have at least five (Coutinho, Digne, Kamara, Carlos, Ings). It all adds up against FFP.
