  1. If we play really well today and continue to do so I would be ecstatic. My worst case scenario however is that Villa continue to scrape the odd win here and there, not having a clear style or idea but limping along averaging around 1 point per game. We would not be getting the most out of the team, but it may not be bad enough to change the manager.
  2. There seems to be many rumours about that failed Liverpool move. Funny detail that he was intended to be a replacement for Coutinho. This article, very critical against Fakir, celebrates the fact he never arrived at Anfield: https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-nabil-fekir-transfer-news-18005575
  3. Another number 10? I guess Fekir could have an important role keeping Buendia happy, sitting on the bench beside him.
  4. Was subbed on in the 89th minute and had a couple of touches in his first game for Man City, but apparently that was too much. Now he’s out with ”some niggles”.
  5. Thank you, 100% agree with this. Chambers for Konsa seems obvious. The two 10s still hasn’t worked, when it’s Coutinho and Buendia they have the same playmaker role and it just doesn’t function. But the diamond — one of them with two strikers to aim for — has been Villa’s only successful attacking setup in recent memory. Also agree Buendia should be the 10 on current form, and Watkins/Bailey should be up top instead of Ings because of pace.
  6. The situation in England is special. In most other countries a newspaper will have a number of journalists specialized in football, who will write about domestic and international football and about many different clubs. In England football writers are often specialists on one particular club and will only write about, e g Arsenal. This makes them more involved in that club’s business and those journalists can potentially get certain news early. The downside is they have to be ”friendly” and can’t be critical without risking some club people stop talking to them.
  7. Watford allegedly had a terrible atmosphere in the squad last season, but now with yet another manager and Dennis and a few others leaving maybe that can change. Will do well if he stays fit.
  8. The CEO and board have to agree of course. But the search would ideally be led by a director of football/sporting director.
  9. Cash is rarely injured which is nice. But Guilbert is apparently leaving so we’d have only Ashley Young as RB cover? Wtf
  10. Ndombele would be a nightmare. Signing him would however put the idea that Gerrard likes hard-working, committed, team oriented winners to rest.
  11. If he stays out of pure football decisions he’ll be judged on more business related matters. But if he insists on making football decisions, like choosing the manager, he will also be judged on our on field success. Because then he’ll be partly responsible for it.
  12. Quality player! 50 years old maybe, but quality.
  13. Must admit I don’t get it. Is he suggesting Gerrard is trying to bury him? And is he planning sabotage at Bodymoor?
  14. No more sales would mean we only managed to sell three players? One of which we didn’t initially want to sell. I remember people speculating about how Villa would raise 100m by selling 10 players this summer (I was hoping too)
  15. If things get really bad, 7 (the first international break). Otherwise 15 (the world cup break).
  16. The system still feels random and like a collection of pieces that don’t fit. Like picking bits here and there, attacking full backs are trendy so let’s have that, possession is trendy so we want that too. SG says we want more possession, but we don’t set up that way. We sort of press but only sometimes and half-hearted, and the pressing doesn’t look organized. We don’t play with a high line. How are Villa supposed to be a possession side that way with players so far apart? We leave huge gaps between defence and midfield, commit a couple of players to a half-arsed press which mostly makes it easier for the opposition to play through.
  17. Purslow has done a lot of good things and seems very capable of running the business side of things, plus seems to have good ideas like the inner-city academy and the suggested cooperation with Vitoria in Portugal. I just want him to leave decisions that takes football expertise to others, preferrably a sporting director. Finding a new manager is one such decision, even though he and the board obviously have to agree with the suggestions. His record at previous clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea, suggests this too.
  18. I agree a good manager would get more out of the current squad. I’m now almost expecting SG to be sacked at the beginning of the World Cup break, and the new manager could use one or two players like the ones I mentioned. But perhaps it’s better to wait and get them if and when the new manager is in place.
  19. A lot of clubs have strengthened in this window and one could argue Villa haven’t become stronger at all relative to the competition. The general idea used to be that we needed a DM for things to click. Now we have one and not much has changed. A new midfielder who can play as 6 or 8 and is very solid in possession would help. Another really good CB would too — we now have Carlos but no obvious partner for him.
  20. Yeah many investors wanting in drives up the value of clubs. But actual revenue enough to make a profit still isn’t there for the vast majority of clubs. It really looks like a super league with salary caps is what owners are hoping for and calculating with.
  21. It’s probably not likely for a very long time. Running a Premier League club mostly seems to be an exciting way of spending lots of money.
  22. I haven’t even got the impression SG dislikes Buendia, I think he rates him. The real problem is that Gerrard set his sights on Coutinho and bet everything on him lifting the team. And with one playmaker in the team, who was most likely guaranteed all the playing time he wants before the World Cup, Buendia is out.
