  1. There’s a whole world of managers out there. Gerrard wasn’t available either but we made the effort of buying him out of his contract. That’s an expensive thing to do, but not as expensive as appointing the wrong manager.
  2. The shift in the policy to sign more older players is hardly Lange’s choice though. Purslow has been quoted saying Gerrard asked him to ”take the age structure up a bit” (something like that). Gerrard wanted quick fixes and older players on high wages are seen as that. Purslow gave his blessings. My view of Lange is that he keeps out of the way as much as possible, does whatever someone tells him to do and is happy to hold down a well paying job.
  3. If we had a powerful sporting director who was going to lead the search things would feel much better. I doubt Lange will have much to say (and maybe that’s just as well tbf). It’s going to be Purslow’s job again looking for managers in Transfermarkt and eventually calling up the few names he knows. Benitez was mentioned in a previous post — it won’t ever be Benitez as long as Purslow is here, they have a very bitter history.
  4. I was referring to both of them really. Yes, I’ve seen Augustinsson a number of times and while he may seem a nice guy I’m not a fan.
  5. The thing is if the club is currently doing the wrong things, it will cost the owners lots of money every week. You may be fine with waiting years for success, I would be too. But the owners won’t be happy to sit around with an increasing wage bill while the team is going backwards. Being patient isn’t always prudent.
  6. We were actually really good for the first … 10 minutes maybe.
  7. He can get sacked after the Southampton game at the earliest, at the first international break, but a decision could of course be made the week before. So he’ll have the games against West Ham, Arsenal, Man City, Leicester and Southampton to begin with. If he gets 4-5 points from those he will probably get another 8 games (until the World Cup break).
  8. Levy finally hired a high-profile director of football to make football appointments though.
  9. Not impossible. But I think Purslow still wants to raise the club’s profile, which would mean a very well known candidate with some star quality. I’m sure Purslow would love a press conference together with Pochettino. But if he’s not interested, I fear it could be another big name ex-player or someone else famous. Southgate won’t be available until december …
  10. You would think sprinting along the touchline was his thing, but he doesn’t really show any signs of wanting to do that. To me his strength seems more to be shooting from distance. About Sarr coming in as another RW, at least their best foot isn’t the same (Sarr right-footed) so Sarr and Bailey could theoretically play either as traditional wingers or inverted.
  11. The header for Watkins goal was brilliant and the shot that hit the bar was great too. Apart from that his overall game was pretty poor, getting dispossessed and failing to get past opponents. Still looks a bit lightweight.
  12. Wouldn’t mind a ”Here we go” with some proper manager from the Bundesliga at the end of the window.
  13. Sigh. We’ll just have to wait and see. But let’s assume they all are shit: why hasn’t SG done something about it? Being the manager he’s not only supposed to improve players, he also has a lot to say about transfers.
  14. Changing to 3421, removing a central midfielder and adding a CB, could in theory make us even weaker in midfield. But if it means we stop using both number 8s so far up the pitch it could be an improvement I guess.
  15. A little different today though, Mings and Konsa pushed slightly higher up in possession. Didn’t work, plenty of balls went over the top without them being played offside. So we had Palace either charging into the empty hole in the picture with Kamara and Mings defending against 5-6 players, or a longer ball over the defence and our CBs chasing one or two free Palace players.
  16. In that Palace match when Gerrard was new, he set the team up very defensively. Villa sat back and defended for most of the game, had very little possession. But was more solid defensively. Now he’s trying to have us play expansive possession football and he doesn’t have a clue how to do it.
  17. The financial position is the scary part imo. Going backwards a season or two doesn’t have to be a disaster. But if you take on huge costs and still get worse — trouble.
  18. Someone here guessed that Purslow would sign an expensive midfielder before the window shuts to try and save his appointed manager. Be interesting to see if that’s the case, if so SG will at least stay until the World Cup.
  19. I’d start Digne without a doubt. Wasn’t good today but not worse than many others. That pen was a joke. And our current back-up is so much worse.
  20. Would be costly, but still much cheaper than signing one poor player.
  21. I don’t even think Martinez was good really, his distribution was painful (but that initial penalty save was great). We did improve slightly when Dougie came on for McGinn. But overall, still no trace of a functioning system. We blame the players but even the best player wouldn’t look good in this setup. They’re doing what Gerrard tells them.
  22. Our defence trying to play Palace attackers offside hasn’t really worked today.
  23. Martinez has now played it out over the touchline to his right two or three times, expecting Cash to be there. Wtf? This is a circus.
