  1. Considering the importance of the manager, for me that has to be the worst place to try and save money. Much rather hold back a little on player transfers (which are also a lot more costly).
  2. I thought about that too when Beale left. I understand he wanted to try and be the head coach, but being a very public face of Gerrard’s setup it would have been brilliant for his career if they could take Villa to Europe. If Beale really believed that was possible he would have stayed on IMO.
  3. Gerrard will always go with the diamond (4312) when he really needs a result. After that it’s straight back to the christmas tree for the next game.
  4. Kamara is 184 cm and not exactly thin either. He would be an average sized CB, as a midfielder he is definitely bigger than average.
  5. I read a theory that a reason Villa are so keen on loaning out players could potentially be FFP. Since player values are amortized yearly, waiting longer to sell them actually makes it easier to show a profit with regards to FFP. Example: Buy a player on 4-year contract for a fee of 20m. Let’s say his value drops to 10m the following year. His book value would be 15m after one year so selling him for 10m would result in a 5m loss. If he’s loaned out a year his book value goes down to 10m, and if the club then sells him for 10m there’s no loss in the books. Loaning him yet another year and then sell for 10m would mean a 5m profit for FFP.
  6. I still quite like the idea of sending Gerrard.
  7. Keeping a bad manager just because it costs some money to change would be the worst decision financially. Qualifying for Europe would bring huge money, every place in the league table is worth 2m, a relegation would cost 100s of millions. Not to mention the damage to the brand by constant underperforming, losing potential sponsor deals et cetera.
  8. Any successful manager could leave, but that risk is higher when the manager is seen as a lot bigger than the club. Just like Ancelotti at Everton.
  9. There is a short break in late September.
  10. They're welcome to have him. Dyche has showed he can set up a team of low budget players to defend in a low block. Some have wondered how good he could be at a club with money, and my guess is he'd set up the team just like Burnley. He's never really made a team play anything other than long balls. Taking a chance on him being good at coaching more attacking football would be a gamble. Our current squad isn't really suited to Dyche ball either unless you think players like Coutinho and Bailey are strong in the air. Villa fans would hate it after a couple of games. The players would hate it too and leave as soon as possible.
  11. Agree they have to say that. But I fear it could quickly come to a point where a huge majority of fans want Gerrard out, and Purslow surprise people with just how much time SG will be given to hopefully turn things around.
  12. It all depends on how much the board is prepared to endure, are they ready to risk him relegating us?
  13. 30 league games, 31 including the cup game against Man U.
  14. I believe it's 30 league games, which makes the average a bit better but far from great. As others have said it's more about the trajectory (and the fact that we look lost).
  15. It seems to me Gerrard trying to adapt to a more possession oriented style is failing. When SG arrived, he focused on things like the distances within the team and making us tighter. Villa defended their way to a few wins during the new manager bounce. Since the new year he has tried to make us into more of a possession side, without some of the things such a side needs: playing a high line and pressing from the front. It hasn't worked and we still can't break down teams that sit back deep. We're also useless in possession when other teams press us. Villa's only few good games this year have been against the best teams, when we haven't been trying to dominate and instead played on the counter.
  16. The way it works at most well-run clubs is the current manager has a veto. He can say no to a player, which is reasonable if he's not going to use him anyway. That doesn't mean the manager has final say on transfers. The search is led by other people and the manager doesn't decide which targets to go after.
  17. Rodgers seems close to being sacked, Leicester fans are almost as negative as us at this point so he's likely to be on the market soon. He wouldn't be my choice though. Miles better than SG obviously but not the injection of confidence Villa need.
  18. People keep saying Purslow is ruthless and I'm sure he is, he certainly gives that impression. But I fear he might have a blind spot when it comes to Gerrard, who according to many interviews with Purslow during the years is more or less his personal idol. There's also the fact that everyone knows about Purslow's role in picking SG, and if Gerrard turns out a flop that will make Purslow look bad. In situations like that it's not uncommon for people to simply double down and pray for the best. Sign a bunch of expensive players to save Gerrard?
  19. I’m sure Potter’s ideas about football are compatible with brazilian and french internationals, but you may be right about the interest from the club. Purslow would probably prefer someone a bit more glamorous.
  20. Following negotiations Ismaila Sarr’s move to Aston Villa from Watford is not, at this stage, advancing. The Athletic understands that Watford did hold talks with Villa over a deal worth in the region of £25m (plus add-ons) but a full agreement has not been reached. Villa were interested in adding another attacker to their forward line and Sarr was seen as an option for manager Steven Gerrard. Crystal Palace are known to be monitoring the situation having shown their interest in the player. Sarr, who is under contract until 2024, has been a key player for Watford since he signed from French side Rennes for £30million in 2019. In total, Sarr has made 95 appearances in all competitions for Watford. He has scored 25 goals and assisted 19 times during his time at the club. Watford play MK Dons on Tuesday in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
  21. They have better players than Sarr already in Eze and Olise (and Zaha obviously).
  22. Leeds today showed what a pre-season can be used for. They were pretty poor after Marsch took over, but during summer they have worked hard on the training pitch and their pressing game now works beautifully. What were Gerrard’s aims for pre-season? Spotting a kangaroo?
  23. I believe you are more or less right. But that would mean Lange is in fact a fairly powerless sporting director. At many others club that have a director of fotball/sporting director, that person will have final say on things like transfers. They would have a budget to work from, with money assigned from the board, and freedom and responsibility within the budget frame. Lange has data analysts working for him and if his job is basically compiling data and presenting lists of transfer candidates, his role is quite limited.
  24. They came in the same window, summer of 2020. That’s also when Lange arrived. Not sure if he was involved in those transfers.
  25. The Athletic today have a big feature on the average age of new signings at the Premier League clubs during the last ten years. Villa’s signings have been relatively old seen over the ten year period which surprised me a bit. But the Gerrard effect is obvious as well. ”When it comes to the impact a current manager has had on the age profile of a club’s signings, Steven Gerrard’s brief time at Villa so far has marked one of the most drastic changes in transfer strategy.” https://theathletic.com/3516067/2022/08/21/age-profile-signings-premier-league/?source=user_shared_article
