  1. It’s possible he couldn’t. From all I’ve heard and read about Potter it’s clear he’s a softspoken leader, seems to get people to buy in without any problem but it could be he’s too nice to survive at a cut-throat place. He’s always being mentioned for the England job, but I think he’d absolutely hate the media pressure that comes with it.
  2. Also, if we stagnate for a few seasons little would point to us picking up speed later. The current owners could well have had second thoughts about the ambition by then, plus in three years we would likely need an expensive rebuild as many recent signings would be 32-33.
  3. Arsenal is a depressing comparison. As recently as 2020 and 2021 we beat them in the league three times in a row, not even conceding a goal. They had serious problems and the general feeling was we were closing in on them. Now a comparison is laughable.
  4. Maybe, but I get the feeling he’s happy to work with what he has and that would probably be the case at his next club too.
  5. I get irrationally angry just by reading Arsenal players’ names. Good you didn’t mention Arsedale.
  6. I’d be surprised if Bailey was able to leave now for a top club, his stock has gone down quite a lot — largely because of injuries which he can’t help but still. Butler is probably just doing what he can to put pressure on SG.
  7. I watched their game today, very impressive again. Leeds doing their turbo press all over the pitch but Brighton just calmly play through it, their passing really is the result of long hours on the training pitch. Should have scored 3 or 4 today.
  8. I suspect some City fans secretly miss the old days.
  9. True, but the manager will always be blamed. And disinterested players could at least partly be his fault.
  10. Rodgers will win the sacking race. Leicester seems to have lost all hope.
  11. I have a different theory. Fans want to identify with their favourite club’s players. The worst possible situation is your club’s players being physically dominated, because that almost feels like you’re being dominated yourself (childhood trauma can play a part here). Because of a distorted view of reality some fans see their own club’s players as being smaller than they actually are. It’s similar to when anorexic girls see themselves in the mirror and believe they’re fat.
  12. I agree on Konsa but SG seems to think highly of him still.
  13. The defence looks pretty far from ok at this point. Not all of it is because of the players though.
  14. Close, but I believe SG goes with this. A win is needed so time for the diamond again but with Bailey/Watkins for pace against WH. Luiz rewarded for cheeky goal last time but is first to get subbed. Konsa back in since Chambers actually set a foot wrong against Bolton. Martinez Cash Konsa Mings Digne Kamara McGinn Luiz Coutinho Bailey Watkins
  15. Taking a different perspective: if their tactic is bullying it hasn’t really worked lately. Since Christmas their PPG is as bad as ours. So it’s definitely not impossible to deal with them just because they’re big. Other teams, more tactically drilled, have won against them easily.
  16. The future is at least two really good centre backs to begin with. Even if Carlos does return to his former level there is room for improvement.
  17. Maybe a Spurs thing, Kulusevski is similar. Not really good at much but the goals and assists keep flowing so far.
  18. I bet a team filled with big aggressive blokes still has the potential to concede lots of goals.
  19. Haven’t seen a player using the ”feels like a new signing” cliché about himself before. Cred to Bailey.
  20. I don’t really see it as Dougie falling out of favour. When Kamara signed it was obvious he would be our first choice nr 6. McGinn is Gerrard’s captain, which leaves one spot in midfield — and we also know SG loves JJ. Surely Dougie understands all this, he’s unlikely to extend that contract.
  21. Exactly this. Lots of unsettling talk and money spent only to be back at square one, but with our original CB duo now partially out of form and low on confidence.
  22. West Ham feels like a poor choice of club for Paqueta. Those comments from Moyes about the transfer window were funny btw: ”The manager accepted he had probably lost count of the number of players for whom West Ham have bid, saying: “Do you know what, I’d probably say yes. We’ve bid for a lot of players and if I told you who, you would burst out laughing and say: ‘You’re kidding.’” https://amp.theguardian.com/football/2022/aug/24/david-moyes-west-ham-bids-lucas-paqueta
  23. That Tyrone Mings is unexpectedly popular at Villa Park?
