We were routinely beating Arsenal a little over a year ago. Three times straight without even conceding. How things change eh
-
Honestly, I’m not sure even McGinn wants him to stay even though he’s become the gaffer’s pet. McGinn doesn’t exactly look happy with the situation he’s ended up in, suddenly despised by most fans. I bet he much preferred things the way they were before SG.

"There is no immediate desire to sack Gerrard, who deserves more time to show that he is the man to engineer a revival"
-
Isn't blaming the coaching automatically the same as blaming the manager?
-
No we're not. Everton are worse. Not much to hang on to, but still.
-
Possible. But if so, it could be broken again a few weeks later when Arsenal play Everton again.
-
Maybe Gerrard was just reading Villa twitter? All those thousands of tweets last season about how we only needed a DM for everything to fall into place.

I'd say we have a top 10 squad, but looking at the money spent it should probably be better than it is. We're top 7 spenders when it comes to wages. As for transfer fees it depends on how far back you look but Villa have spent a lot. If the squad doesn't reflect that spending, it reflects poorly on the people responsible for transfers. Another thing is the fact we now look like actual relegation candidates, with this squad. That is on Gerrard.
-
Yeah they are quite similar and we should ideally be going for a different type. (Still wouldn't say no if Chelsea were stupid enough to sell for 27m)

Didn't like that french tweet about Southampton getting ready to sell Bednarek and replace him with Caleta-Car.

No central defender after not having any on the bench yesterday?

Brilliant about Gerrard's problems, well worth a listen. Edit: also very interesting about the club's approach to recruiting players
-
This may sound overly critical but I'd say there are a few more bad calls than just hiring Gerrard. Jesus wasn't a successful appointment and the jury is still out on Lange, IMO. The change in transfer targets under Gerrard, towards older players on high wages, was also cleared with Purslow.

The Talking Tactics bloke is a scout who is running an analytics account and isn't related to Villa. But he got a lot of Villa followers from the start for some reason so have been writing quite a lot about us.

One strange thing though is that when playing two up top, our nr 10 seems to be tasked with picking up the opposition DM. Like yesterday when Coutinho was onto Rice whenever WH were in possession. But when we play with two nr 10s, no-one seems to do that which has been a problem. It's been mentioned before the game yesterday too.

Considering Purslow's track record we could soon see Hodgson come out of retirement. Saw him interviewed on tv last week, looked like he missed the game.
-
Mostly agree of course. But for the record, here is our last 10 games where we've started with one striker instead of two. Palace (L) Bournemouth (L) Man City (L) Burnley (D) Norwich (W) Leicester (D) Wolves (L) Arsenal (L) Watford (L) Newcastle (L)

It’s possible, but we’ve signed a lot of players who weren’t lower level when they came here. If true we have ruined them.
-
He’s been poor for Chelsea now for some reason but that doesn’t negate what he did at Palace. Maybe he’s not the superstar people thought last season, but definitely a good player.

I’d say he was (is) a great man and a decent manager.
-
I know, almost making myself scared. But at least Gallagher is good?

Villa haven’t had a great manager in a long time. It’s time to change that.
-
Predicting how deadline day will turn out. Three players in: Bednarek, Dawson, Gallagher. Three out: Bailey, Douglas Luiz, Mings.

That’s my worry too. The idea was that even if Gerrard didn’t work out, he would still leave us in a better place because of his ability to bring in players. People weren’t counting on Gerrard’s desperate attempts to save his job, which makes him get rid of young talent and unsettles the squad.
