  1. The whole idea of improving by stamping out individual errors is wrong to me. That’s managing a football team like an assembly line. Of course we want to make fewer mistakes but we also want creativity and people taking initiatives. A focus on individual mistakes will create nervous players and a culture of blaming others.
  2. Expect Konsa and Bednarek to start tomorrow.
  3. Mings hung out to dry again: ”The two goals we conceded - and a lot of goals we have conceded - have been down to individuals." He does not name names in this instance but perhaps he does not have to. "Showing someone the wrong way rather than on their weaker side." It is easy to conclude that this is a reference to the team's erstwhile captain Tyrone Mings allowing Bukayo Saka to cut inside on his favoured left foot and cross the ball for Gabriel Martinelli's winner.”
  4. Trying to eliminate risk sounds good but could limit us. What candidates have already been successful in England and won trophies here, still active and relevant? Mourinho, Conte, Pep and Klopp? Don’t believe Ranieri counts these days.
  5. Anne Frank and Adolf Hutter both suggested in the same thread!
  6. I’m not as convinced about Arteta, but I think I know what you mean. I’d like a manager who really knows football not only by having played but also on an intellectual level. Someone who can see the benefits of different football philosophies, can analyze games properly, use various tactics for different problems. A smart devil who really knows his stuff and doesn’t just call for more money or more passion.
  7. For the record, it wouldn’t be enough for me. But my guess is Purslow would accept that for now.
  8. Gerrard will get until after the first intl break minimum and I suppose Purslow would rather keep a lid on things until then. Purslow right now will be holding all the thumbs he’s got for SG to turn things around - if only just a little bit, enough to delay the sacking and make things a little less embarrassing. This was my nightmare scenario when SG was appointed - how will Purslow act if his personal hero turns out to be an obvious failure? It’s not as bad as if he’d appointed his own son, but considering Purslow’s intense love for Liverpool and Captain Fantastic it’s pretty close. Heard today on the Guardian’s weekly football podcast someone in the panel mention the exact same thing, the risk of Purslow extending Gerrard’s stay for longer than he should.
  9. Adolf Hutter is available, did reasonably well at Mönchengladbach, Frankfurt and Salzburg. His name has a certain ring to it.
  10. Arsenal and Man City are free hits. A point each against Leicester and Southampton will probably be enough.
  11. Every time he's had time to work on embedding the system, things get worse.
  12. When my lads score a goal I get hard like a totem pole
  13. You have a point about windows closing later in some other countries, maybe we intend to ship players there. Looks strange with Nakamba, Sanson and Guilbert so clearly out of favour yet still not sold or even sent on loan.
  14. If Gerrard gets pelted with things during games other candidates may think twice about accepting the job.
  15. Sounds like Gallagher doesn’t it? If so he can be added to JWP, Bissouma and Bentancur as central midfielders who escaped.
  16. Kamara was beyond what I believed the club could achieve, a young France international watched by all the biggest clubs and a future top player. Carlos, very good player horribly injured. Overall questionable, wage bill has shot up and if those older players on high wages don’t instantly improve us there’s a problem. We’ve added some depth but Kamara the only improvement on the starting XI.
  17. But normally we make planned signings where there’s plenty of time to arrange those photos. Today was more of trolley dash, difficult to get people in the studio that quick. But hope I’m wrong of course
  18. As facial expressions go, fully agree with Gerrard’s look after the Martinelli goal. That was a genuinely beaten man.
  19. It’s usually when there’s a feeling in the air the manager won’t survive another loss, and being behind with 20 mins left throws on every striker available. I think Smith did it against Southampton. The Keinan Davis moment.
  20. If we look at how the player is rated at his home club and count PL appearances and international caps, it’s a bit like getting Trezeguet on loan to cover for an injury on Bailey. Not glamorous but ok.
  21. January? Don’t think even Gerrard has suggested a return that early. Or has he?
  22. But that Mings-Bednarek-Dendoncker triangle becomes quite scary if you throw in a ball there somewhere
