  1. He’s basically just a cheerleader. A sour one without enthusiasm.
  2. I can see Purslow cling on to ”unbeaten in 4”.
  3. This. Most of the players have had other, better managers before. Gerrard’s like a geography teacher who can’t find China on the map. It’s all very embarrassing but no-one is allowed to giggle.
  4. He’s lying. ”Increased hand-to-face contact tends to signal deception. Hand-to-face contact increases with cognitive load and with the initiation of the fight or flight response. Liars often experience the fight or flight response and an increase in cognitive load, which causes stress.” https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/let-their-words-do-the-talking/201512/detecting-deception-observing-hand-face-touching?amp
  5. Imagine the scenes at Bodymoor tomorrow. Gerrard doesn’t say hi to anyone, just locks himself into his office and tries desperately to reach Beale on the phone. Critchley, Danks, McAllister, MacPhee and Culshaw all argue about who should take training. The players talk to their agents.
  6. While the season is young you can say anything. We’re only 7 points from the Champions League spots! And 5 from rock bottom.
  7. If Gerrard is replaced with a good manager tomorrow we’ll finish around 10th. If he stays, relegation very possible.
  8. Breaking down opponents who sit deep takes coaching. Villa are absolutely useless at it, since Gerrard doesn’t do coaching.
  9. That diving header from McGinn was pure comedy. Top class.
  10. Tbf Forest are sitting deep as hell so this won’t ever be an entertaining game. Our problem is that we’re notoriously bad at breaking down a low block. Sigh.
  11. Forest haven’t shown anything until now, but why should they.
  12. Maybe someone mark Dennis, since he’s their main goal threat and dangerous in the air?
  13. This is it. The correlation between wage bill and results is usually strong. If we really don't believe our current squad can achieve 7th or 8th, questions should be asked around recent player recruitment.
  14. To me, Lange seems sidelined. I reacted to quotes from Purslow in February where he referred to a chat with SG about signing older players. ”Also, when I talked about Steven giving his initial feedback, he said, 'Look, I'd like to take the age profile up a little bit. We were the youngest average-age starting team in the league last season. I'd like to have proven winners'.” https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfer-news-purslow-22947333.amp To me it sounds like Gerrard wanted to tweak the transfer policy towards older, established players and Purslow gave a green light. Not sure Lange has much influence on anything since Gerrard arrived (maybe he never had).
  15. Win tomorrow and we’re only 1 point behind Bournemouth.
  16. With our luck we’d probably get Dalglish in exchange.
  17. Not exactly obvious, but 30-year-olds are usually only developing in one direction. He was logically going to get worse, if not now then maybe next season. Plus there’s the psychological effect of getting that final huge contract (Villa have been handing them out lately too)
  18. Funny how Arsenal fans always complain about VAR calls, they’re being given this game for free.
  19. The worst thing Purslow’s done is to agree to that recent change in transfer policy as suggested by SG. (”Take the average age up a bit”) Of course SG wanted to sign experienced players, managers need to show quick results so that’s natural. But the club/board are supposed to think about the future, to hold back and stick with the policy.
  20. We hear all the time about Pep’s and Klopp’s respective systems, and Conte’s and Potter’s. The media love to discuss successful systems. There’s a lot less talk about Gerrard’s system however, probably because it’s difficult to even identify it.
  21. If Juventus get a new manager surely it would be Conte? He would turn up at their training ground Monday morning if Allegri was sacked.
  22. Exactly this. If you don’t practice different patterns of play, and instead just rely on the players to improvise, that is what you get. But work on that on the training pitch and players will look more confident in games.
  23. Good managers have a tendency of getting their players to do the job.
