  1. It’s been a long time since Sanson was a £15m asset. After basically not playing for 1.5 years we’d be lucky to find someone to take over his contract, even without a fee.
  2. Maybe we’re at a stage where we have ”manager signings” and ”club signings”? Would be unprofessional of course but not unlikely or uncommon. Donk may look like value for money on some Excel spreadsheet in Lange’s computer.
  3. That article is wrong about at least one detail, Purslow isn’t a ”southerner”. He and his noble family are from the Wirral, which is probably why they’re such Liverpool fans. There’s no shortage of articles making fun of Purslow though, he seems to amuse people from all over the country.
  4. He’s still performing for Argentina, so one reason is surely confidence being low in the squad. Another thing is the fact he’s not really confident with his feet, which could be an issue if Villa get a manager who cares about such things.
  5. When Villa make bad signings, it’s nice to think about Chelsea paying £62m for Cucurella because he’s so versatile and can play CB.
  6. SG likes to tinker with attacking formations and after today we’ll probably get a couple of weeks with Ings and Bailey playing, Buendia and Coutinho on the bench. Until Bailey has his next crap game, and we start over again.
  7. That’s a pretty depressing scenario, probably correct too.
  8. Yeah. Of course, we already have a DoF — sporting director is just another name for it. But Lange certainly isn’t the industry heavyweight Villa need. He’s either doing a poor job, or is sidelined by more powerful personalities in the form of Gerrard and Purslow. Every club that is successful in the long run has a strong DoF, someone who has the last word on football matters (within budget limits obviously). Villa’s leadership structure doesn’t look good.
  9. Probably a press conference for the new crest.
  10. Attack looked better with Ings, Bailey and Watkins in the first half, very predictable it all went to shit when Coutinho and Buendia came on.
  11. In this case, it’s more like SG is slowly turning Watkins into Samatta.
  12. There’s a big difference between those two though. For Gerrard to be offered a better job, he’d have to be successful at Villa first (sounds absurd now). Poch on the other hand has proven himself already and could receive offers from day one. I still think it would be worth it to appoint Poch if he said yes, but the risk of him suddenly leaving would be real.
  13. Strange how he’s digging McGinn out in those quotes too. Regardless of what you think of McGinn, it’s unusual for a manager to rub salt in a player’s wounds like that in public.
  14. He’s tried everything he knows, which when it comes to coaching and tactics isn’t much?
  15. I’m afraid he’ll get until the World cup break no matter what. It’s obvious to me Purslow has seen SG as a very long time solution, he was supposed to be the beginning of an era at the club. With that view it’ll take a lot for Purslow to change his mind.
  16. "We have to keep creating chances". Keep? We aren't creating anything, that's the no 1 problem currently.
  17. Arguing about players is what forums like this is for but it feels beside the point now, like arguing about how to arrange the deck chairs on the Titanic.
  18. Coutinho was a special case as he and Gerrard knew each other. But the other three could possibly have been signed under another manager, as long as they were offered 120k per week or more. Look at Lingard choosing Forest. When asked, he’d say he went there because it was such an exciting project and Steve Cooper such a good manager. In reality, the fact he was offered 200k per week probably played a big part. Same with Digne, Carlos and Kamara, they chose a club that paid well.
  19. This is exactly what I think as well. Villa usually save their good performances for the top teams (Liverpool last season, Man City twice last season and this season, also played well against Chelsea and Spurs). We’re better when we concentrate on defending and the odd counter. Then get humiliated by Fulham and Brentford.
  20. You can’t go wrong with a german. Take your pick, Purslow. https://www.transfermarkt.com/1-bundesliga/trainer/pokalwettbewerb/L1
  21. Let’s hope Leicester start winning then.
  22. I wouldn't be surprised if Coutinho retired after the World Cup, regardless if he makes it to Qatar or not. I have a feeling playing there for Brazil is his only motivation these days. As for Traore, let's hope he returns here someday.
  23. Experience and some success from working in one (or more) of the four big leagues in Europe, and speaks good English.
  24. Napoli are amazing now. Just checked, they are unbeaten since April with 19 wins and 5 draws. Playing wonderful football too.
  25. My guess is Lange is being sidelined by Gerrard/Purslow. For example, when Purslow explained in a Sky interview how Gerrard had come to him wanting to sign older players, which Purslow gave his blessing. But since Lange is still responsible for recruitment at least on paper, he should take the consequences of that and resign immediately.
