  1. Worked better than Coutinho and Buendia as narrow 10’s. Everything is relative.
  2. Except for Cash/Bednarek, this line-up was 100% expected. When something shows any sign of working, like the first half against Chelsea, Gerrard will always keep doing that exact same thing until it doesn’t work anymore. It usually only takes one game for that to happen.
  3. Tbf it was a bit different against Chelsea with Watkins and Bailey wide. It worked okay. But Fulham may be a bit more defensive and we all know Villa are helpless trying to break down a defence.
  4. Honestly can’t think of a line-up that would have changed my mind about Gerrard. Player selection isn’t what irritates me most, it’s the fact he doesn’t do any meaningful coaching or tactics work between games. I guess the gameplan for tonight is something like ”play on the front foot and no mistakes lads”
  5. Has Chambers ever played RB at Villa? I can only remember him playing at CB. At Arsenal, I believe RB was his main position.
  6. People keep expecting formation changes, SG doesn’t do those. Changing between 4312, 4321 and 433 is as crazy as it gets.
  7. It’s a regular 433, Konsa at RB
  8. He can be fit but not 100%? Hard to believe SG makes that switch otherwise.
  9. If Villa sack Gerrard at the World Cup break and we’re firmly in the bottom 3 by then, I dread to think about the managers we may have to choose from. The usual gang of british firefighters obviously plus people like Daniel Farke and Nuno?
  10. I’m sure you’re basically right but there are some differences. Look at Everton last season, their football was diabolical but still the home fans more or less carried them through.
  11. The problem is the players don’t agree with you, they will want to go to the World Cup more than anything and being dropped will surely affect their general motivation (and possibly how they perform for the club). I almost can’t imagine how Coutinho would react to being dropped, it’s his last chance after all.
  12. Most realistic is we go into the World cup break on something like 11 points after 15 games (draws against Brentford and Brighton), which would be pretty alarming. It could take some work to dig ourselves out of that hole.
  13. We may not be able to say there are three worse teams, but at least there’s one (Forest). We’ll never be rock bottom.
  14. Smith and Gerrard aren’t the only football related appointments by Purslow, just as important are the sporting directors. Purslow’s picks so far are Suso and Lange. Have they been successful, has recruitment gone well and what is the current transfer policy exactly?
  15. While the season is young, two wins will always move you quickly up the table. The table isn’t really meaningful until at least 15 games or so are played. What’s worrying for us is the fact we look like crap. Keep doing what we’re currently doing and we’ll be in deep trouble by the World cup break, no question about that.
  16. I’d be happy if Mings made less of those. That said, ”error directly leading to a goal” is such a bullshit stat. Mostly because the outcome depends on whether the opponent getting the chance scores or not. If he doesn’t, there’s no error leading to goal — even though the error made is still the same. A defender could make errors all day without his stats looking bad, as long as the chances fall to Timo Werner.
  17. Yeah no room for interpretation there. What little credibility Football Insider have will be shot to pieces if it turns out to be false tomorrow.
  18. Gerrard leaving might not make much difference to the actual coaching but could have an effect on mentality, like when an oppressed nation is liberated from a despotic ruler.
  19. Those pre seasons have really killed us. It’s absurd. Villa under SG are a team that gets worse the more time is spent in training, and also worse in games where they have more of the ball.
  20. If the owners see no realistic way for Villa to compete regularly in Europe, they will have to change their plans. The vision has been playing in Europe relatively soon, and a bit further on in the Champions League instead of Europa. Long term budgets look so much better if a club plays in the UCL. If the long term goal is revised to simply being in the top 10, they can't keep spending as much.
  21. The decision will be made to fit in with the World Cup break. SG will get the 5 remaining games.
  22. Don’t think the bomb squad members are suddenly going to get minutes, they may still be in the team on paper but not in reality. Very much doubt Nakamba, Sanson, Guilbert will appear again under SG. If they wanted game time they should have joined Bert in Turkey.
  23. No action in this thread? I was pleasantly surprised with Bailey today, one of his best games in a Villa shirt.
  24. I guess for a moment he couldn’t see the free kick taker properly and moved to get a better view.
