  1. Luiz seems really out of form and doesn’t add much. Then again, no one does right now. Not the manager either.
  2. In those first Gerrard games, the team had a much tighter shape and was dedicated to sitting back and defending. We also played against tough opponents so had very little possession. I don’t think we want to keep playing like that, handing over possession and defend in a mid or low block, against bottom half teams. But we have gone towards a looser shape overall and I don’t think Nakamba’s prescence is the whole answer. I also think we need a new defensive mid, maybe not Nakamba but someone with a broader skill set.
  3. Nakamba has played 9 games at DM this season, we won 3 and lost 6. Average 1.78 goals conceded. One clean sheet. Luiz played 14 games at DM this season, we won 5, drew 3 and lost 6. Average 1.43 goals conceded. Five clean sheets.
  4. Someone wondered when Gerrard was appointed how he’d react when working with a team that doesn’t win most of its games. It’s a new experience for him, to deal with recurring losses. As I see it he will either be able to lift the players, or there will grow a rift where he feels let down and the players feel he’s asking for the impossible.
  5. Maybe, but no way is Newcastles squad better than ours (yet). Still they won. It’s part of the manager’s job to motivate.
  6. Second half we at least tried to play through midfield albeit with poor results. In first half we didn’t even try, lots of long balls without obvious address. Why was that?
  7. Thought you were going to say it’s time for Roy to take over Villa.
  8. This is the problem that won’t go away. It’s not that we aren’t big and muscular enough. It’s the fact we can’t ever take control, keep possession and progress up the pitch by moving the ball. Our CBs aren’t ball players, nor is McGinn or Cash. Digne is too far away to be involved in the build-up. Too many are too poor in possession. So instead we hoof it and chase second balls. Just like Burnley.
  9. 35 points will surely be enough this season. We need 8 more to get there with 15 games left. If we can’t do that might as well put the club under administration.
  10. When Villa play like this people are always calling out for the ones who don’t play. Now with Bailey back Sanson is the only remaining hope, but I doubt he’ll play for Villa again. And for good reason.
  11. During that losing run some games were actually worse. Arsenal away, West Ham at home and Southampton away were really abysmal.
  12. Smart of Newcastles fans to fake a heart incident to destroy the rhythm of the game.
  13. This game is running out because of all the breaks. Will only add a few minutes anyway = ****
  14. Most of those have played better, I don’t buy that they’ve always been shit. This is a case of system and game plan not working at all.
  15. The talk about ”no excuses” is about to come back and bite Gerrard in the arse. I still believe we have some good players, but where is the passing game? We don’t even try to play through midfield against Newcastle, just hoof and chase second balls (which we lose). We’re basically a more expensive Burnley but with less fight.
  16. Penalty would have been better, Martinez would have saved.
  17. We’re not a ball playing team even against Newcastle. Always long balls.
  18. Watkins starting could be a case of wanting to give a player a run of games. Watkins has only started two games in a row (Leeds and Everton). Before that, Ings started four games straight.
  19. Newcastle have one top class player, Bruno G, and he starts on the bench which is strange but nice.
  20. Against Everton last week, they were playing crosses into our box the whole of second half. Pretty easy for Mings. I agree Mings makes mistakes, but he’s not usually weak in the air or easily bullied.
  21. The defence was also fine against Everton just last week. In that game we also dominated midfield, until Everton in second half decided to by-pass midfield completely and play hoofball.
  22. I’m still not worried about ASM, we have dealt with him previously. But Bruno G is a top player and will probably start today. He’s going to be huge for Newcastle and could today be the difference between us controlling midfield or not.
  23. Yeah Watkins value has likely dropped. Last summer when he was one of the previous seasons best newcomers and recently capped he could have been worth 50m.
