  1. I’m worried about the strategy to try and poach players from other midtable clubs in the same league. Obviously great to get players who know the league, but the problem is we’re not in a position to realistically get other clubs’ best assets. Southampton wouldn’t let JWP go, Arsenal was never letting Smith-Rowe go and it’s likely the same with Leicester. Bissouma is about to leave, but hardly to us. Most other clubs in a similar situation take the plunge and try to find top talent outside of England. Aren’t Villa capable of that? Focusing on a small number of proven top players from PL feels like a dead-end street.
  2. In the first picture, Watkins is the only one to look even remotely happy. Coutinho looks like he’s throwing up. Maybe something for Birmingham Mail to pick up, ”Villa talisman sick of no Bissouma”
  3. Could be interesting to see Villa at home hand over possession to Watford and just sit back.
  4. With Nakamba as 6 we’ve conceded 1.78 goals per game average this season. With Luiz as 6, we conceded 1.36 per game. Nakamba had four good games before the injury, those first Gerrard games when Villa mostly played against possession-heavy sides and we defended in a tight and narrow block. That suited him, but not sure he’d thrive as much now the whole team is more spread out in shape.
  5. Fans of many clubs seem to be crying out for new and better DMs. Man U fans hate McFred, Leicester fans slate Ndidi, Liverpool not happy with Thiago, Arsenal fans disappointed with Partey, Spurs fans can’t stand Hojbjerg and so on. All seem sure a new DM is key.
  6. OT: with the design on Villa’s home shirt this season I now think of us as the barcodes.
  7. Very much agree stats can be misleading. Which ones are you looking at? Whoscored says Luiz had Villa’s third highest pass completion against Leeds and highest vs Newcastle. Losing possession 11 times is pretty standard, McGinn had 10 and Coutinho 12. Digne lost it 26 times vs Newcastle.
  8. The list of goal scorers also tells us that almost no traditional strikers are having a good season. Vardy 9 goals, Maupay, Ronaldo, Dennis and Antonio 8. Those are the highest scoring strikers. Watkins on 5 is the same as Kane and Lukaku. Ings on 4 is the same as Aubameyang and Richarlison.
  9. Yes, and still this has been the major trend in top football for years now. Almost every team now demand fullbacks ”bomb forward” while other positions have to sweep up and cover defensively. I guess Burnley are still an exception though.
  10. But still with the fullbacks very attacking instead of having normal wingers…. That’s right about Liverpool, their midfield is a lot more disciplined. No room for Ramsey’s way of playing there. Our own budget version would at least need Nakamba and Luiz playing together, in the roles of Fabinho and Thiago (ball winner/deep playmaker).
  11. Creating chaos is the easiest thing, my five year old son can do that. Gerrard will be judged on whether he can create harmony and results.
  12. I think he’s looked good when he’s come on. Not just hitting the post against Spurs either, nearly scored vs Man City and created a goal vs Norwich through that run and assist. One could ask Sanson what he’s done? Especially since Sanson has in fact played almost twice as many minutes as Chukwuemeka, since Gerrard took over.
  13. Just wait until Coutinho has two or three bad games in a row, the usual Villa accounts on Twitter will immediately begin to ask questions. ”Is it time to bench this overpaid diva and bring Trezeguet home from Turkey ?”
  14. A bit harsh. I think Konsa is somewhat limited as a defender because of his unproven passing abilities, but is he that inconsistent? And if he is, who in the squad isn’t?
  15. Very true. The sad thing is that clubs that do well on a limited budget have top recruiting and are very well coached. Difficult to spend yourself to the top without those foundations.
  16. I was surprised when I saw before the Newcastle game Watkins had only started the previous two games centrally. So he’s not had a very long run. Before that, Ings started four games straight. So Ings hasn’t been benched for long. In my mind, I thought Watkins had started at least five in a row and that Ings hadn’t started in a long time.
  17. That’s the big question isn’t it? Is Konsa good on the ball and can he pass. If so he could be a top defender, if not maybe that’s why he’s not getting into the England team.
  18. Can’t you see it? Gerrard loves winning. By being around him players will also begin to love winning. Finally, players will actually start to win because they now love it so much.
  19. One question is what will happen to his motivation after december. The world cup is likely the main reason he’s here, he has to play regular football to have a chance to play for Brazil. When that’s over, it’s possible his motivation to keep going isn’t there. He’s very rich and has already won champions league plus a dozen other trophies.
  20. He had a run of six games where he was quite poor. Defensively most of all but not sharp going forward either. But I think we’ll need him as one of the 10s going forward, Coutinho will probably not play every game, and I believe he has the quality needed to improve.
  21. Agree. Brighton, Wolves and Southampton stand out as smaller clubs with really good managers.
  22. Looking back at stats is confusing. I see Sanson has actually played 225 minutes under Gerrard, almost twice as much as Chukwuemeka (137).
  23. The way I heard it Sanson was the first data driven Lange signing. Smith inspected him and gave him a run of games but wasn’t impressed. Then he got injured. Smith had by then made up his mind and didn’t want him back. Bottles were destroyed. When Gerrard came, Sanson was first still injured but fit in time for Gerrard’s thrird game. He then came off the bench in a number of games but didn’t impress all that much. Then came the Man U start when McGinn was suspended. Some say he did well, some say he was poor. Bottles thrown again, which Gerrard said was a case of good fighting spirit (I suspect Gerrard told a white lie, and was actually offended by what he saw as a lack of respect). No more minutes after that.
  24. There’s a proper campaign for Sanson to start now, Birmingham Mail demands it. The people has had enough and wants to see the hidden star player. I think Gerrard will cave. Would be a funny situation though, if Gerrard was being bullied by the fans. If Sanson plays as 6, you’d hope Gerrard at least recreates the tight and narrow shape of his earliest days. That would help a bit.
  25. Top players usually have better ball control that’s true, but large parts of a possession style can also be learned. Training of movement and positioning to increase passing options is a main thing, together with making possession a main objective. That’s why Man C usually slow down, instead of bombing forward in a counter, when they win the ball back. Brighton nearly always dominate possession with a low budget squad. Long hours on the training pitch with Potter. If Burnley and Brighton swapped managers the teams would probably gradually change in each others direction.
