  1. Wouldn’t mind if Villa signed a player or two from Salzburg/Leipzig. Those clubs seem to have a crazy eye for talent and also teach players to work very hard off the ball. Real pressing machines, which I guess is why so many have ended up at Liverpool lately.
  2. I think it’s because the authorities want to give the impression goals being disallowed is something rare. Openly admitting it’s now usually premature to celebrate goals would mean admitting VAR is killing the game.
  3. If they’re still that good, they’re unlikely to come here - Coutinho was an exception as Gerrard’s old teammate. Those on that level who came would be past their prime, like when Everton signed James Rodriguez. Bringing in washed players like Aubameyang or Aaron Ramsey on huge wages would kill the club quickly.
  4. Wouldn’t be surprised if a few more players wanted out in summer. The one with the least game time of Watkins and Ings, possibly Bailey if he ends up second fiddle to Buendia, definitely Mings if Gerrard brings in a high profile CB. Maintaining depth will remain difficult unless you can offer perks like ridiculous wages, guaranteed trophies or european football.
  5. Just wait until Ramsey has a couple of bad games in a row, people will want to include him in the fire sale as well.
  6. That’s really promising! Throw in an inexperienced defensive mid in the form of Chambers, Sanson or Iroegbunam and it could get quite hairy. I’ve been surprised Watford don’t score more when they actually have three decent or even good attacking players in Sarr, Dennis and King.
  7. Gerrard is probably still a pretty big draw but that could be short-lived. The pull factor of playing for a legendary midfielder will disappear if he doesn’t improve Villa before the summer.
  8. To clarify, I’m not saying Villa should buy a bunch of totally unknown 19 year olds for £1m each. I’m saying our only realistic chance of signing top players is to sign them from abroad. Players who have stood out in France, Germany or Holland. They will probably cost a lot in most cases. Top players who are already established in England are very rarely available to us. Either the owning club won’t sell to a direct rival or, if the player is running down his contract to be able to pick his dream club, he’s unlikely to choose Villa. Buying standout players from other PL clubs is very difficult unless you’re Man City. Digne was a lucky exception with the Rafa situation.
  9. The aim is of course to gradually improve the squad. But I don’t think we’ll ever be able to buy those top 8 players from within the league. If we want top players, we will have to develop them ourselves or buy talent who haven’t yet come to England.
  10. But we will have to persist with Gerrard and Gomez?
  11. I would probably think the same, but Gerrard might have to consider the fans too. The general opinion seems to be Luiz should never wear a Villa shirt again so starting him would be a risk. Also, Gerrard has been clear he sees McGinn as basically undroppable due to his ”steel”.
  12. Fans are often critical of players in the team they support. Spurs fans hate Spurs players, Juventus fans hate Juventus players and so on.
  13. From what I’ve heard, Carney’s best mate at the club is JPB. Do they have the same agent? It looks to me as those two are the biggest talents currently, and it would be pretty shit if both refused to extend contracts and ended up at Dortmund.
  14. Of course it’s in Villa’s interests to add depth, and players are under contract. I might actually have forced Targett to stay. But don’t blame him for wanting out. If Villa spent big money on signing Hakimi, I’d understand if Cash wanted out.
  15. I’m not crazy about Targett, but it’s double standards. Fans see it as Villa players have a moral obligation to stay as backup, because it’s convenient for the club. But happy when other players come here for more game time.
  16. Digne could have stayed and argued his point of view. Looking back now, we know a couple of weeks would have been enough.
  17. Ok then, you mean more like when Digne wanted to leave Everton instantly after Rafa benched him?
  18. Not saying they would have, but the biggest Championship clubs sometimes sign foreign players around or close to that price.
  19. We could have competed for Ndidi or Bissouma back then, if we had known they existed. None of them were big stars when they came to England from Belgium and France, they cost about 15m each.
  20. Emi Martinez is another player who chose to move to get more game time, instead of staying and fighting for the shirt at Arsenal. Good reminder there.
  21. So basically we should have kept Targett…? I agree they strengthened in the right places. Bruno G will probably be a huge player for them and he has only played about five minutes so far.
  22. Buendia will play, it’s him and Coutinho who are first choice. Bailey and Traore look like they may end up outside.
  23. Mathematically, we can still win the league! (I just counted)
  24. The thing is, even if Gerrard wanted to replace the whole team he can’t really afford to wait until next season to improve. For him to have a chance of attracting players, he must be able to at least show signs of improvement soon. Otherwise, media will begin to talk about Villa’s expensive failure and Gerrard being a flop, leading to difficult recruitment in summer. When I questioned bringing in a player like Coutinho in January with the chances of Europe more or less already gone, some explained it with Gerrard wanting a strong finish to the season exactly to create buzz and make recruiting easier.
  25. People demand changes to the team and Gerrard has said so too. Expect some players in positions they’re not used to. Could still be ok because after all it’s Watford, the worst team in the league. One worry though is Sarr will definitely start and he’s good enough to cause problems. Expect him to be trouble for Villa’s left side, with Digne high up the pitch as usual Ramsey and Mings will have to be careful. Along with Sanson if he’s supposed to be the defensive shield. Ashley Young could very well come into the team again. People tend to forget about him and then be reminded that he can sometimes be pretty good. He hasn’t been involved in the last couple of disasters either and I could see Gerrard leaning on him in a turbulent time.
