Giving Gerrard a free pass in this case is almost like blaming the car if a driver keeps getting into accidents. Some seem to think a manager’s job is picking the XI, making subs and giving a post-match interview, because those are the things visible to people on the outside. That’s maybe 1 percent of the job. The players have played much better previously and will do so again. They are now visibly struggling to compensate for holes in a flawed system. Villa’s squad is lacking in a couple of positions but should definitely be top 10, probably a little higher than that.

True, Sanson for Luiz would have been the obvious choice. Horrible sub it was anyway, surrendering midfield completely and asking to be cut open.

Maybe Gerrard felt he had to please the crowds a little, many seem to want Luiz punished.. Just saw in the Birmingham Mail he was voted worst on the pitch yesterday.

He’s a bit like Conte. Wants quick results and breaks the bank to sign older players with ”experience”. The difference is Conte knows a bit about tactics and sometimes wins things before he leaves the club in ruins.

I think the plan for next season is to loan him out to a newly promoted team or a team at the bottom end of Premier League. Which basically means loaning him to ourselves.

We’ve had quite a lot of possession today and against Newcastle without creating anything. Hardly any shots on goal. So in these games I can’t see it make much difference. As for earlier games, I agree.

We have 27 points. In other teams with 27 points or less there are players like Maddison, Ndidi, Vardy, Barnes, Gallagher, Olise, Toney, Phillips, Raphinha, Richarlison. They are good and we have a couple as well.

A good allround DM could do that but probably not Nakamba. Nakamba can win you the ball, but won’t make you keep possession.

Liverpool also have players who are more reliable in possession so the fullbacks don’t have to retreat and sprint back quite as often.

He was one of the most expensive players, definitely isn’t now and won’t be again. Very much doubt a champions league club will come for him even if he continues to show flashes of brilliance.

I just had this vision. We are shit for one or two more games and fans begin to turn on Gerrard. Purslow decides it’s time to calm the masses and address supporters on Villa TV. ”Dear villans. I firmly believe Steven Gerrard is the man to take us into the future” etc

Gerrard is used to winning games as manager due to lack of competition in Scotland. While he still played he was also in a relatively successful team. Maybe he can’t handle it when things repeatedly go against him.

Next game: scrap Gerrard’s system. Play with wingers and make them track back. Make fullbacks defend and let midfielders occupy central midfield. It could work.

Fine with me, but don’t think he was the main reason why we only had one shot on target today and one against Newcastle. The defensive mid debate is one thing, Villa being totally unable to create chances is another.

That defensive midfielder, would he make us create more qualified chances? That’s where the major problem has been today and against Newcastle.

There’s plenty of managers in Europe. Smith, Gerrard and Lampard have one thing in common — they don’t have much experience of managing at a high level.
