We’re not getting best in class players, at least not now, so that alternative doesn’t really exist. We’ll have to work with good but flawed players and hope a clever manager can make them look better than they are. Going shopping for a CL quality squad isn’t possible.

Saying your players lack belief is basically admitting you’re a shit manager. If only you were a more inspiring coach …. Not a great comment but saying the right things in interviews is difficult tbf. Being Prem manager is a lot like being a politician, sending the right messages here and there.

No manager has been able to use those three in England so it looks like questionable signings? If Lampard had been given endless backing like Pep or Arteta, he could have made dozens of shit signings like that. I’m saying it’s risky and potentially very expensive to let every manager buy a new squad.

Arteta has been fortunate enough to work at a club where he’s been given the money needed to replace almost every player. Most managers don’t have that luxury, nor should they have. It’s not a sustainable way of running a club. Managers should be able to work with what they have to some extent, the Chelsea model.

Coutinho attracting other players is just like Gerrard attracting players - it will only work as long as Villa perform really well. If Villa are crap for the rest of the season, no players will want to come for the argument: ”but that crap side is where Coutinho and Gerrard are!”

Pressing must be planned on the training pitch, if not it’s just random players wasting energy and potentially opening holes in their own team. Bruno Fernandes type of pressing. Gerrard doesn’t seem interested in playing with a high press (nothing wrong with that, there are other ways).

Probably not, and that goes for everyone of those three new players from last summer.

Ball playing centre backs with composure are great to have in games like this, against teams that press high. Not saying we’d have won if Chambers played but it wouldn’t have hurt.

Maybe he won’t, but he has to play pretty damn good to make some other club pay up. One problem with Coutinho is that Gerrard would rather commit harakiri than bench him. Gerrard has bet his whole credibilty on bringing Coutinho back to the top.

My eternal hatred for Arsenal makes it difficult to see straight, but I didn’t think they were at their usual level today. Quite poor second half from them. We were dull, toothless and sloppy. McGinn and Ramsey were shit but no-one really stood out as good. Coutinho pretty useless as well. Worst thing about it is the Arsenal hype will only increase. If the weather was bad at least one could hope their bus had some sort of accident.

We will never get anywhere as long as our passing stays like this. Constant giveaways. Won’t help adding a 7 ft monster as DM either.

Was our best player against West Ham. Far from it today though.

On the plus side, Arsenal will be less interested in buying Coutinho as well.

Arsenal are soft too, but they get by having talent.

Martinez constantly being booed by the away fans. Feels wrong having to deal with that at a home game.
