  1. Signing 30 year olds on ridiculous wages could be the new Villa way. Ings, Digne, Coutinho followed by Wijnaldum, Suarez and Arturo Vidal.
  2. Bailey probably gave William a discount coupon for his new clothing line so I’d guess there’s no hard feelings.
  3. I agree Arsenal weren’t great last season but they spent more than any other club last summer, close to 150m. Bought White, Odegaard, Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, Lokonga, Tavares. Arteta hasn’t only been given time, he’s had money as well the disgusting little word removed.
  4. Watkins called up now is strange, but there aren’t many good english in form strikers.
  5. Imagine if Newcastle decided to blow their whole FFP allowance on giving Neymar the £1m per week he’d demand. What a dream.
  6. Exactly. Ironically, if or when they pick up the Super League concept again it will 100% include a salary cap.
  7. I still can’t understand why we can’t just have a salary cap that goes for all clubs. Relating everything to income will only lead to more made-up sponsor deals, especially at the state-owned clubs.
  8. If they collectively played better, then that’s tactics isn’t it?
  9. But seriously, Phillips size. People have been complaining for years about Villa having too small players and the need for a physically imposing DM. Phillips is no bigger than most of our players - a little taller than Dougie, roughly the same size as McGinn and smaller than Ramsey. Is Phillips big enough? Bissouma is bigger btw and would offer more midfielder mass per pound.
  10. We have more issues than those. A general lack of players who are confident on the ball, press resistant and good passers. A more possession oriented style can be achieved to some extent through work on the training pitch but some personnel changes may be needed. The alternative is obviously for Gerrard to give up those ambitions of having more possession and being able to control more games. Maybe it’s easier for a club like Villa to have success with another style.
  11. Already our current contracts are worth more so I’d say Villa would be a bit more expensive.
  12. On paper they have more to play for than we do, plus their fans should be furious after the disaster against Leeds. But I agree it’s about time to beat them, ideally with a good margin.
  13. If Phillips doesn’t live up to expectations I look forward to the continued debate about Villa’s midfield and how 5’10 is nowhere enough - not even bigger than Nakamba.
  14. Yes, but I’ve seen many comparisons from different sources and while the exact figures vary it seems certain Premier League has the highest salaries, La Liga are nr 2 and then there’s a drop down to Serie A and Bundesliga. PSG obviously stand out in Ligue 1. (and Vlahovic’s salary was quoted as before taxes.)
  15. You think we could get Gomez for 15m? I guess Liverpool will be looking for at least 25m.
  16. Agree with your point, but Serie A is really tight with player salaries these days. Vlahovic, sought after by half of Europe in January, signed with Juventus for £110k per week. Less than we pay Ings and far less than Digne is getting.
  17. Not even Partey has been doing things well until one or two months ago. He’s been hopeless for the most part of his time at Arsenal (even admitting it himself, rating his time at the club as 4 out of 10). It’s no surprise they’re playing well now Partey has improved, but weird how they managed even relatively well before that.
  18. Selling Chukwuemeka for 10m, to be able to buy Phillips for 50 or more likely 60, should be enough to put a sporting director in front of the international criminal court in The Hague.
  19. Pukki is great and so underrated because he plays for Norwich and Finland. His age is the only argument against.
  20. The narrative about players not caring is lazy. That’s like saying the bronze medalist in high jump in the olympics probably just didn’t give a shit, because if he did he’d have won. Premier League players are watched by a hundred million people every game. If they have a bad game, their careers can be ruined and everything they’ve worked for all their lives. You and I can afford to be lazy at work, they can’t. Villa players are good or even very good but most don’t quite have league winning talent. The’re not perfectly coached either which makes their jobs more difficult.
  21. Value for money have been good or even very good for the players signed 2019 and 2020. Last summer however doesn’t look good in retrospect.
  22. Newcastle will be a big factor on the market this summer and I have a feeling we and them often will chase the same players. The smaller PL clubs will buy cheaply at the lower end, while Man City will compete for Haaland. Liverpool and Chelsea make one or two high-end deals and Arsenal/Spurs try to sign young and promising players with star quality. Somewhere in between I expect Newcastle and Villa to be. Eager to climb the table, bidding for slightly older players who will be expected to deliver right away, but with lower development potential and resale value. The rich and desperate clubs, maybe.
  23. Man U have been interested in Phillps before, but they’ve appeared equally interested in McGinn… Don’t think Arsenal or Spurs would pay 60m for Phillips, it wouldn’t fit their transfer policies to pay that much for a 26-year-old and their fans would likely riot. For perspective, 60m would make Phillips Spurs’ record signing, and a salary of 10m per year would be almost exactly what they pay Harry Kane.
  24. I wonder how much we could get for Konsa. He’s been praised, mostly by Villa fans but still, so you’d think he could be fairly expensive. If Villa upgraded him to a confident ball playing CB it could make a difference when it comes to our build-up and ball retention.
  25. I’m not saying we should buy more squad players from Brugge. But good players from clubs like Lille, Lyon, Marseilles, Dortmund, Leipzig, Sevilla, Napoli etc. With a little luck you can even sign standout players from those clubs, like Newcastle did with Bruno Guimaraes.
