  1. Most managers get more than five months yes. But they usually don’t get the luxury of hand-picking their own team before being evaluated. New managers are expected to improve the team they inherit, no matter if it’s Chelsea, Spurs or Leeds. ”I haven’t brought in my own players yet” is rarely accepted as an excuse.
  2. I feel almost sorry for him too, mainly because he’s been described as a saviour during his time out so expectations may be ridiculous. He is limited on the ball but very solid defensively.
  3. Gerrard using only one dedicated DM means the two numbers 8s must help out quite a lot defensively. In his system, by defending out wide a bit like fullbacks. Regardless of Nakamba.
  4. Our main owners seem to be great people, but they’re far from being experts in the football business. They have chosen Purslow to run the club and if he tells them this the way to go, they’ll probably trust him. At least another year. I can’t see Purslow ever taking the initiative to sack Gerrard, so if the owners want a new manager they’ll have to buy out Purslow as well.
  5. Curious about why people want to persist with two 10’s, instead of going with one 10 and Watkins/Ings on top.
  6. Managers are expected to chase quick fixes, since they can get sacked anytime. That’s why you need a powerful DoF or at least a board/ceo to think about the future, resale values, FFP and so on. When the manager wants to spend big on older players, the DoF or board should hold back a little to strike a healthy balance. A ceo giving the manager carte blanche would destroy any such balance.
  7. I saw that tweet too and am not convinced that account is anything more than a fraud. But that said, it does fit with signals coming out from the club. Lange seems to be more or less out of the picture already and Gerrard wanting to show results quick isn’t surprising. Tbf Purslow wanting to give Gerrard increased power wouldn’t surprise either. Hope it’s just fantasies, because if true it would really be a recipe for disaster.
  8. I agree with almost everything you wrote, but don’t believe Gerrard is in any sort of danger yet. The board has probably accepted the fact this season is a failure and instead look forward to the summer. Worst case, the summer is spent making offers for players who aren’t keen on coming to a currently underachieving club. And it ends with us signing a bunch of proven winners, coming on free transfers and high salaries, from clubs that don’t want to extend their contracts.
  9. Maybe some but don’t count me in. I was all for letting Smith go, but wanted him replaced with an experienced and tactically strong alternative. It’s absurd we’re still debating Smith vs Gerrard as if it were Beatles vs Rolling Stones. Neither Smith nor Gerrard had had success, or even any experience at all, in a big league before being appointed!
  10. That pattern is new for this season though. Last season under Smith, we beat Liverpool, Arsenal twice, Chelsea and Spurs. On the other hand, we also got beat by Burnley, Sheffield and Leeds. Last season felt like we could beat anyone on a good day, that feeling is gone.
  11. Complaining about Sanson is hard but someone has to do it. I still haven’t seen yesterday’s game, but he might have a stronger case for game time if he could point to more things he’d contributed. Goals, assists, chances created, key passes etc. Dougie doesn’t do much of that either but plays further back so is excused. Ramsey made himself undroppable with goals and McGinn with, I don’t know, hard tackles? Sanson being tidy gets overlooked easily.
  12. That’s because Serie A is much more demanding, coming to the Prem is like holiday in comparison… Ok that was a joke. But Bentancur is now helped by playing in a very well coached team where everyone knows their roles. He didn’t look nearly as good in Allegri’s Juventus, (and I’m not sure he would have in this Villa team either).
  13. For all our losses, we’ve rarely been beaten with big numbers this season. We usually lose 2-1 or 1-0. Interesting to see if Spurs can change that.
  14. So you insist Emerson Royal is better than Cash.
  15. Not quite true, our squad is far from great but Cash is way better than Emerson Royal and Wan Bissaka, probably better than Tomiyasu as well. Martinez hasn’t been as good this season but is at least as good as Ramsdale and Lloris. Watkins doesn’t score often but Lacazette scores even less. When it comes to coaching however I believe we are definitely in the bottom 3.
  16. Players who are 30 or 31 also know how to lose, they have done it many more times then the youngsters. Winners, as we talk about them, are those who’ve played for good clubs and therefore won trophies. Grealish will become a winner in a couple of months. Winners who might consider coming to Villa would do so to get paid, a lot. They already have the trophies and would rather be looking for a lucrative final contract. They would be the opposite of hungry, like a low budget version of when winners like Hazard come to Real Madrid or Ramos to PSG.
  17. He has said repeatedly he wants to stay at Leeds and I can’t see how Villa could change his mind. Hope they have other candidates.
  18. All managers inherit someone else’s squad when they take over. And the reason they got the job is, nearly always, the predecessor failing with that squad. The sign of a good manager is the ability to improve the squad he takes over. All managers will also want to add players they like, but it’s rare to demand a clear-out when stepping in. I agree with others that even though players may deserve to hear they’re not good enough, it’s usually a counter-productive thing to say. Also somewhat irritating is that when Gerrard ”threatens” players with the possibility of getting sold, he doesn’t for a second doubt his own future. Gerrard seems confident Purslow won’t bother him.
  19. I’m afraid this may be true, they both seem to struggle with handling adversity. I hate Newcastle as much as anyone, and Eddie Howe deserves questions about being paid by murderers, but they got the appointment right in a football sense. Instead of chasing impossible star players, Howe seem intent on building a functioning team. Quite impressed with his work so far.
  20. I agree Ings has been a failure and last summer looks like an expensive flop overall. But the fact he scored loads last season, in the same league, proves we have a team that for some reason doesn’t work. I fear we’ll keep signing players and put them into the team only to find out they’ve suddenly become shit.
  21. ASM is the definition of a player lacking end product, or lacking a brain even. I can understand Howe wants to sell him since he’s cost them quite a few points this season, casually dribbling and being dispossessed at the halfway line. Makes Traore look disciplined.
  22. IMO the transfer business was mostly good from promotion and through the summer of 2020. The team gradually strengthened and also performed much better 20/21 than the previous season. The question marks for me are from the end of 2020 and going forward, which coincides with Lange’s appointment though I’m not sure he’s to blame. The board seems to have become a bit impatient and not content with gradual improvement, so we have begun looking for players who have come further in their development.
  23. No, it’s documented and exists. Only logical too, would almost be strange if struggling teams didn’t pick up momentarily with a new leader bringing some hope, plus players do their best to impress.
  24. Brentford are now just 3 points behind us, not sure we want to compare spending with them. In fact, the only team we will want to compare ourselves with are Everton.
  25. Exactly, we may go for players who have come relatively far in their careers and are ready to give up status and european football, to prioritize money instead.
