  1. Maybe off topic but still don’t understand talk about top 8. I don’t want us to finish 8th, just below any chance of european football. It’s like going to the olympics with the intention of finishing 4th and not having to deal with medals.
  2. As long as we sign two new CBs and have one as extra back-up for Gomez it could work. Seriously I don’t see the point. If you have a choice, why go for someone so likely to have problems?
  3. My expectations for Gerrard would be to visibly improve the team during the summer. Not mainly through new signings, rather by establishing a more effective way of playing. He and his staff, working with the team on the training pitch. If he can do that I will happily take my hat off. But if we early in next season still complain about not having the players needed, that for me would prove there’s nothing more to hope for from him.
  4. I take back what I said about his career being over. He’s just getting started!
  5. Looked at the heatmap for the first half, it was almost absurd. It’s rare for teams to dominate games as much as Villa did in those first 45. The problem is, when you lose 4-0 the gut reaction will automatically be to do everything different next time.
  6. The possibility of Europe was basically gone, but Coutinho was supposed to give us a respectable league finish and make recruiting easier going forward.
  7. I’m quite sure Gerrard will never manage Liverpool. Not even if he finishes 6th with Villa and does well in Europa League. The way Liverpool are run, I’m sure they will go after the best coach in world football when Klopp leaves. Ideally they’ll want another visionary. They won’t give the job to a club legend on sentimental grounds, especially not one basing his own philosophy largely on Klopp’s.
  8. For the first 11 games Smith mostly tried three at the back, with a very shaky Tuanzebe, to be able to fit both Watkins and Ings in. Bad system, bad results.
  9. If Gerrard spends big on fees, at least we will probably get some relatively young players deemed to have potential. Worst case imo is we give long contracts to a number of ageing players on free transfers.
  10. The teams at the top have far better players, but there isn’t anything such as a certain top 6 level. Teams move in and out of the top 6 for various reasons, luck being one of them. If we look at current top 6 teams, Man Citys squad has almost nothing in common with West Ham’s in terms of quality.
  11. Our squad is the 9th most valuable (Transfermarkt) so by that metric should be 9th. (Funny detail is Everton have the 8th most valuable squad). Valuation corresponds pretty well with league position. Man C, Liverpool, Chelsea are top 3. Man U, Everton and to some degree Villa underperform. West Ham and Wolves outperforn.
  12. Only performing for 45 minutes has been a common theme, but yesterday it was actually understandable. No team can play with an intense high press a whole game. So a change of tactics in the second half was needed.
  13. It’s true Bailey hasn’t had many chances, but I’d be more enthusiastic if he’d shown more in the minutes he’s had. Now it feels pretty much like a toss up between playing him or Traore.
  14. And some think we should get Saint-Maximin, to do just that every five minutes.
  15. If this had been Afcon, the ref would have blown at 83 minutes
  16. What’s the word for quadruple when you actually only win one? Onetuple?
  17. Sadly Bayern’s form has fallen off lately. Would have been sweet to have this galactico super game followed by Liverpool and Man C both getting knocked out of CL the coming weeks.
  18. I hear Klep and Poop are both cautiously optimistic but deeply respectful before the game.
  19. Playing really well too. West Ham on the other hand absolutely awful. West Ham should consider improving their poor midfield.
  20. We haven’t created much with Coutinho and Buendia both on the pitch, clearly better with Coutinho only. Buendia has become the victim of Coutinho coming, he had just about become our best player when it happened and I don’t see a solution except Villa for some reason not signing Coutinho.
  21. Looks like it’s time to take the crown off Vieira’s head again.
  22. A combination of disappoinment over losing big in that particular game and having too high expectations in general? Returning to the Prem and becoming a mid-table side shouldn’t be so bad, but since the new owners came everything has been about us reaching top 6 and Europe. When that doesn’t happen the overall feeling is it’s all pointless. People will probably get their hopes up again in July. Me too (unless we sign Wijnaldum and Arturo Vidal).
  23. The high press made quite the difference yesterday though, while it lasted. Also, no team can have an intensive high press for 90 minutes. It’s too exhausting.
  24. Fully agree (except many play 3-4-3 also).
