  1. Comparing the outcomes of playing one or two strikers (and one or two 10s) I’d be surprised if Buendia and Coutinho started together.
  2. Good description. We usually don’t press high, probably for reasons mentioned, and the Spurs game wasn’t typical imo. I don’t really know what Gerrard’s preferred way of playing is — early on it was to surrender possession, sit back and defend in a narrow block. Then we wanted to have more possession, leading to being vulnerable in transition when the fullbacks are way up, the 8s defend out wide and Dougie alone in the middle. And now pressing high after all, maybe.
  3. Did West Ham fans say that? I remember them kicking Villa players for 90 minutes, in the face and other places. I don’t think Villa are weak by the way, fans just assume we’re soft when we give the ball away. More a lack of football skills than softness imo.
  4. Ticket income have become next to meaningless with the current inflation in transfer fees and wages. Crowds in the stadium are still important, but mainly to make for a better show on tv.
  5. It’s an unusual situation, normally players are looking to move to bigger clubs. Coutinho has done all that and seems to be driven by other things (money still being on of them though). I still wonder what will happen to his motivation after the World Cup.
  6. Just read on one of the player salary sites that Hause new contract makes him one of Villa’s highest paid players with £4.16m per year. I suspect they added a zero by mistake. Either that or his agent is a world class negotiator.
  7. This is the main difference imo, Liverpool’s midfield three are very defensive minded while Ramsey and McGinn are quite the opposite.
  8. If he goes to Roma and we make 6th, we’re likely to meet him again in Europa league. Roma usually finish 5th or 6th so are regulars in that competition.
  9. Strikers have to be good at many things yes. Still looking for what it is in Gerrard’s system that demands so much more from the strikers. I know in his system the DM has the task of shielding the back 4 and covering a large part of the pitch centrally, and the 8s double as full backs when out of possession. But I haven’t seen the job description for the strikers being that different from other systems. You say Watkins and Ings, despite in many ways being mediocre in your view, could work in others systems. What systems?
  10. Howe has improved Newcastle and not only by signing players since the existing players most of all are performing much better. Vieira started with a largely new squad in the summer and has established a completely new style for them. Both teams look like coaching jobs well done. Gerrard’s Villa still look more like a work in progress.
  11. Please name some strikers who fit the system. And what does his system demand from strikers, other than scoring goals?
  12. Exactly. I keep praying for us to look outside of England but that doesn’t seem likely.
  13. Thank you. Hate the idea that playing some of the best young players in the country will automatically lead to losing games. Spurs under Poch and Arsenal under Arteta have proven otherwise.
  14. What’s so special about it? Looks like any other player thread to me, some saying he’s shit, some saying he’s not.
  15. Adjusted for tax differences, Wijnaldum is apparently on £310k per week now.
  16. I would have much preferred if he’d tackled Son.
  17. Depends on your definition of a top class manager. Someone who is brilliant at improving teams, or someone who has worked at the highest level? Premier League is currently the most attractive league for players and managers, since the money is gone elsewhere but remains here. After the big 6 clubs, Villa are probably the most attractive english job for a manager. Big club, previous managers underperformed leaving room for improvement, owners ready to invest heavily. If Purslow wanted to, he could more or less take his pick among current managers in the Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga or Ligue 1. He could probably also attract almost anyone currently managing the other 14 in the Prem. The idea that Villa should be happy for anyone who is willing to come is laughable.
  18. I have a distinct memory of Son breaking Andre Gomes’ leg. But he looks so innocent right?
  19. If we had the same amount of luck against Spurs as we had in the 7-2 against Liverpool, we could have won by similar numbers. In the Liverpool game, 3 or 4 of our goals were crazy deflections. Against Spurs our luck was 180 degrees the opposite.
  20. If rumours are true, the midfield three next season could be Bissouma, McGinn, Ramsey. Bissouma is a good player but I’m not sure about the composition of that trio. One runner, one fighter and one who is a bit of both. Is there enough ball playing skills?
  21. Basically agree. In Villa’s case, Purslow’s problem would be if the two main owners lost faith in the project and wanted out. I don’t think NSWE have the intention of hiring and firing ceo:s.
  22. Roma were reported to be after him a year ago, if I remember correctly he was too expensive for them. Makes sense for them to try again now, with only one year left he will be much cheaper. I guess around 20m. My guess is he’ll enjoy Italy and do well in that league.
  23. I’m talking about targets for next season. Obviously it would have been better to finish much higher this season, and it would have meant more tv money too.
  24. Don’t think Cash is going anywhere after getting an improved contract last week.
