Atletico used the only tactics possible, try to keep it 0-0 until 65-70 minutes and then go for it. It they had gone forward already from the start, they’d take a big risk of conceding early and lose faith. I was impressed with the press they City under for the final 20-25 minutes, they almost did it.

How many points does Gerrard need to keep his job?
VillaParkAvenue replied to YLN's topic in Villa Talk
Sounds absurd. Two relatively unqualified managers, and Villa would then act like they are the only ones in the world. As if Man Utd would switch back and forth between Ole and Michael Carrick forever. -

But belonging to that club he becomes a ”proven winner”, which apparently is important. He will know what it’s like to receive a medal. -
Christ, Atletico were so close to take it to extended time. Chaotic defending from Man City, they’re really poor when they sit deep like that.

Yeah football accounting is interesting. Next year though the JG income is 0 while last summer’s signings still cost another 22.5, to which we add new signings and so on. I read FFP could be a reason why Villa prefer to send players on loan, since amortization means selling a player one or two seasons later can turn a value decrease into a ”profit”.

We could definitely use the money, not least for FFP reasons. I’d sell for more than 50.

I would guess Villa pay more than the others, except for maybe Newcastle. While league positions are important for giving an impression, they also change. The big 6 usually finish high and newly promoted clubs low, but the others bounce up and down. West Ham could easily finish 14th next season and Everton 8th. I wouldn’t rule out Bissouma signing for Villa. He doesn’t stand out enough to be irresistible for the top clubs.

Yeah, with Luiz we've pretty much had a flat three. But wasn't the idea to have someone more like Nakamba sitting back as a shield?

In Gerrard's system, isn't the DM supposed to sit back and shield the defense? Bissouma hasn't had that role at Brighton.

I like them but neither is really a defensive midfielder.

Not even Liverpool or Man City play with intense high press a whole game, they do it in periods. It's too exhausting.
-
Conceding early has become a real problem. We rarely did that last season, in fact then we often went ahead early.
-
And if you turn half of our wins into draws, we're relegated. When people talk about needing more draws, it's only converting losses for some reason. I don't buy the idea that having lots of draws shows you've got character. Brighton and Palace have lost many points this season by conceding late and turning a win into a draw.

The problem is that confidence is largely a team thing. A team with a recent history of making comebacks will be much more confident about the possibility of doing it again. And if you take one of our players and put him into a team on a winning run, he'd get confident too. Bayern's players were probably the most confident in Europe in 2020-2021. But around 6 months ago they started having games where they missed a lot of chances and lost, even though they dominated every stat. Now their heads drop as soon as something goes against them.

Gerrard has said he admires Pau Torres. But as one of the most sought after centre-backs in Europe he's sadly out of our league.

Villa normally don't play with a high line, Martinez would have to be higher up the pitch and ready to sweep. Not sure he's comfortable with that.
-
Spot on. Go on and buy new players by all means, but stop using it as a threat all the time. It's embarrassing for everyone involved and most likely counterproductive.
-
You’re a better man than me. I also enjoy seeing celebrated teams and managers fail.
-
I look more forward to the FA cup semi this weekend. A Champions League final between the two could be almost unbearable when you think about the media hype that will preceed it.
-
Not the most exciting CL season. The spanish teams remaining aren’t that good and the semis look predictable. Leading up to a final between two teams that play each other all the bloody time.
-
We have Olsen now so no need to worry.
-
We see them together on the bench most games.
-
Been poor lately and maybe his time is up.

Bayern have really fallen off a cliff the last few months though, they have this type of game often now where they dominate everything but end up losing. Don’t think Bayern’s board will put up with this.
