  1. Nice try! http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=6882
  2. Yeah. Newcastle were likely to stay up with any manager, considering the standard of the other teams at the bottom and them being able to strenghen in January. Still think Howe has done an solid job improving players who were already there, like Joelinton, Shelvey and others, plus seems to have created a good atmosphere.
  3. I often read other forums and can confirm this to be 100% true. Common opinions regardless of club are that the goalkeeper shouldn't be blamed while the midfield is shite.
  4. The fee was negotiated but the salary seems to be the problem. Maybe Villa were hoping Coutinho would agree to lower his salary more. If he is holding out for a salary close to what he had at Barcelona, I can see why Villa are hesitant.
  5. I don’t think they’re stupid either. If reliance on a certain system led to an unreasonable player turnover the board would surely stop it.
  6. This is probably what is happening exactly. But imo, it’s not sustainable unless you are Man City or maybe Liverpool and can attract any player you want. And you must be able to economically handle buying expensive players and selling them at a loss. Other clubs will probably have to at least partly make do with what they have. If you don’t have all the players needed for system A, then at least tweak it. Michael Owen had a clip where he talked enthusiastically about ”weeding players out”, that’s not possible for most clubs. Also, players are usually able to adapt. Conte’s teams often end up playing much the same way wherever he goes, even before he’s made that many signings.
  7. Martinez is built differently from many top keepers which is probably both good and bad. He is heavier than most keepers which could make it harder for him in some situations, like quickly coming down low. But more leg muscle gives more power when taking off for a dive, at penalties for example. Good in the air imo but not that great with his feet. Most of all, brilliant character of course.
  8. I didn’t think we were that great in Gerrard’s first few games even though we won some of them, we were set up to defend and not much else, had 30% possession against Palace and others. But in that three game winning run recently, and against Spurs, we’ve shown signs of quality. If it wasn’t for those games, I’d want Gerrard out immediately.
  9. Would that be attractive to a potential signing, the possibility of becoming captain right away? To me it would signal ”the team is in turmoil and we expect you to sort this mess out”.
  10. Of the five players you mentioned only Ajer was signed after promotion. Not sure what you disagree with, is it the importance of Eriksen or technical players in general? In my view Brentford have become almost a new team after Eriksen came, winning five of their last six games.
  11. Konsa has been widely praised up until the last few months, by fans and various media. One strange thing though is there’s hardly ever been any reports about other clubs being interested in him?
  12. A new front three, do you mean a new striker and two new number 10s? The 10s for me feels like a position where we have too many already,
  13. Assume you’re talking about Boubacar and not the Gerrard-connected Kamara? Nice suggestions there, would like to add Laimer from Leipzig as well.
  14. David Michael was at one of those fan consultation meetings with Purslow recently, this is some of what he wrote about the coming summer window (no great surprises imo, maybe some people had been expecting more turnover in the squad?) ”Purslow admitted, that the window would not be one of wholesale change like the initial seasons under Dean Smith back in the Premier League. Yet, at the same time, he said, it wouldn’t be a case of just getting one or two in. The approach to this summer’s window will very much be about rejuggling the squad. It was pretty clear supporters can expect several players to be moved on, to make way for what you’d expect to be an incoming four or five players.”
  15. But I just said most players were lifted during that time, Cash, McGinn, Nakamba and so on. You also say that having a player with Nakamba’s skills is important and I agree. Nakamba will most likely return as the solid defensive mid he’s been for a long time. Expecting something else seems unfair to him. I really don’t see how saying Nakamba wasn’t transformed is somehow miscrediting Gerrard. He lifted everyone when he came like new managers often, but not always, do.
  16. The six big clubs tend to finish high and the newly promoted low, but league positions apart from that often change a lot between seasons. West Ham and Wolves (especially without Rice and Neves) could easily finish bottom half next season, Southampton, Palace or Leeds could be 7th. Remember Burnley finished far ahead of West Ham just two seasons ago, with largely the same squads as now. Midtable will always be unpredictable.
  17. I don’t buy the idea that Gerrard transformed Nakamba. The transformation idea feels like something local papers suggested when the excitement peaked around Gerrard, and we assumed players would just soak up his prescence. The whole team was lifted for a while and Nakamba too. He seemed in great form but didn’t change his game.
  18. But Brentford have been poor for most of the season and what turned things around was signing a technical player. A bloke with so limited physical presence, he was actually declared dead once.
  19. Would be interesting to see him try and sign 10-12 players per season here. Probably not possible though due to player prices. A player for the scottish league doesn’t cost much so might as well buy a dozen, and change til it fits.
  20. We also played Nakamba and Luiz together for a few of those positive games.
  21. Yes. Defensively strong, athletic, technique, passing. Just about the complete central midfielder.
  22. True. They made the best signing in January, Bruno G, but only recently started playing him.
  23. Why can’t they just be limited as footballers? Could just as likely be mentally weak fans, if you go by the constant mood swings online.
  24. Yeah, we really have an opportunity to create something. Not easy of course.
  25. The best way of creating a connection between team and fans imo is to play youth. Fans see their own youth prospects develop on the pitch, year on year. Spurs did it under Pochettino and Arsenal now under Arteta, and fans of those clubs say they’ve never felt more connected to the club then when that happened (still happens at Arsenal). The opposite would be ideal if a club wants disengaged fans. Have a huge turnover in the squad every year. Sign older players who fans associate with a number of other clubs. Give them short contracts so we don’t even get to know them.
