  1. First thing he notices is that training is more intense?
  2. Targett having a dig at Gerrard (and Smith I suppose) at the end of this article about the turnaround of Newcastle. Their training is much better. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/apr/21/eddie-howe-manager-of-the-season-newcastle-dan-burn
  3. They will. The Guardian had a celebratory piece on Newcastle yesterday, focused on how Howe has turned them around. At the end there is a passage about how brilliant Targett has been, where he also speaks about how great the training is at Newcastle. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2022/apr/21/eddie-howe-manager-of-the-season-newcastle-dan-burn Targett is similarly optimistic. He has impressed hugely at left-back and, like Burn, has no regrets about saying yes to Howe. “It’s been an unbelievable turnaround,” he said. “This club was in quite a dark, dark place until the new owners came in. But the team’s really stepped up under the new manager. “The first thing I noticed was that training’s really intense. We do certain drills daily so the manager nails what we need to do in certain areas into our heads. But this season has to be just a stepping stone.”
  4. Didn’t they do a lot of playing out from the back as well? Mindblowing.
  5. Early this season Villa had a lot of injuries, but so had many other clubs. Maybe related to the euros and poor pre seasons? Now, injuries in the Prem must be almost at an all time low with many clubs having almost fully fit squads.
  6. I’d be onboard with Bissouma/Kamara. Of the names mentioned now I’m only doubting Kondogbia somewhat, since some midfielders from La Liga have needed time to adjust. (Some from Ligue 1 too tbf, we have a Sanson adjusting still)
  7. It was widely reported he took a pay cut when he came here on loan, but I haven’t seen any comments about his salary going forward.
  8. Lampard was starting to feel the heat in the media recently being described as spoiled, inexperienced, self centered, can’t deal with adversity and so on. But now Everton has taken a couple of points so he’s off the hook for the time being. Gerrard will likely be lambasted by the media as well unless Villa’s form picks up soon. In the build em up/knock em down narrative, England’s golden boys will be tempting targets.
  9. Bissouma is very capable but recently went through a period where he didn’t seem to care which is somewhat worrying. Against Spurs he was great again, was that to impress some certain suitor? Haven’t seen Kamara nearly as often as Bissouma but in the games I’ve watched he’s looked very good.
  10. You don’t play Coutinho to do him a favour and develop him, you play him because he’s very good and useful while he’s here.
  11. The main issue imo will be attracting players, those valued at 50m are unlikely to come to Villa even if we have the money. Not many DMs are valued that high btw.
  12. Finally Haaland is brought to a country where games are televised!
  13. Comparing Gerrard to Arteta could be bang on if we’re talking Arteta from last season, the bloke who signed Willian and gave Aubameyang a three year extension
  14. Transfer windows are usually quite painful but this summer will be a new record in that respect. Every news outlet knows Villa are looking to strenghten and that we have a famous ex Liverpool manager, but the Coutinho loan was the real catalyst. Hundreds of players on expiring contracts will be linked to us.
  15. I agree with most of the description of PGV (Post Grealish Villa). Are there really that many fans who don't want to improve the squad, just to see SG fail? In my opinion we have a squad that needs strengthening, and also a head coach who seems to underperform with the squad we have. I see a worrying tendency lately of going for solutions that look good on paper, signing and appointing big names in the hope of elevating the club's status. Chasing players who are at other PL clubs, or players sought after by bigger clubs. The same goes for appointing SG, a world famous name but with largely unknown managerial skills.
  16. Chambers should take Konsa’s spot and maybe Nakamba instead of McGinn. Digne hopefully back. Keep playing with one 10 only (Coutinho).
  17. Rivals drawing is usually the best result since less points are awarded overall.
  18. Another aspect of it is that a team can be that bad, and still be far ahead of us in the table.
  19. Pep will stiill make Haaland confused and frustrated during the first season, he will have to learn to always think about his positioning in relation to team mates, learn to sometimes slow down instead of charging forward in transitions and so on. I predict the papers will call him an expensive failure a few times before he gets used to the team (or Pep leaves, whichever comes first).
  20. I fully understand hating the Glazers for appointing idiots in every position, that’s their main problem.
  21. As a compromise, maybe Jack is rapid but not **** rapid.
  22. That would be eight players to fill out the front three?
  23. What I said wasn't meant as a call for Gerrard to leave. I'm against describing things as if he did the club a favour. For the record I thought it was time for Smith to go when he did, the club should demand a lot from its managers.
  24. Villa would have been attractive to a lot of managers, it beats most other job options. The Premier League is the most attractive league to work in currently because this is where the money is. Relatively big and well-supported club which is also debt free and well run. Owners very wealthy plus ambitious and willing to spend. Squad is decent and owners want to improve it. We had a poor start to the season and there was plenty of time for a new manager to change things. The idea that Villa were in a such a mess no one would realistically take the job is absurd to me.
  25. Well, if we keep losing games Gerrard will probably get sacked and owners will rethink investing this summer. So quite a lot is at stake, compared to if we were chasing a spot in the conference league next season.
