  1. If Forest don’t get promoted, maybe some slightly bigger club could steal Cooper from them.
  2. I’m more concerned about playing the same system. Have nothing against using more or less the same players.
  3. I’m looking forward to Bert apparently being in the squad.
  4. We’ve lately actually struggled to score (sometimes) when playing two strikers, and struggled to create when playing two nr 10s. Sounds strange but isn’t really, more chances are created when two strikers move the defence around and create space, while scoring isn’t more effective with two up top instead of one.
  5. Maybe a swap deal where Marseille get Sanson back and we get Caleta-Car plus €5m?
  6. Yeah, and similar reports. "Roy Hodgson has revealed Christian Purslow, Liverpool's former managing director, handed him a list of players to sell in the summer and believes the team's recent improvement stems from his decision to ignore the businessman's advice." https://www.theguardian.com/football/2010/dec/11/roy-hodgson-liverpool-nesv
  7. I may still be a little suspicious after those old reports about Purslow’s years as ceo at Liverpool, when it was reported Purslow was making himself very involved in transfers while Benitez first and Hodgson later tried to keep him out. Much of what was written then probably wasn’t very fair or truthful.
  8. Chambers over Konsa would be nice.
  9. Anyone heard of Nakamba having a setback with his injury or something? You'd think he would be ready otherwise.
  10. Has Gerrard said he wants a DM like that, or have people made that conclusion after Nakamba played the first games with him in charge? I often see references to Gerrard's system, but it sometimes feels like I missed the initial presentation or something.
  11. Cherry-picking specific stats is also very useful if you want to discredit a player online. Choose a stat that supports your view, pick the most suitable time period and you can prove almost anything. Some stats are also random by nature, like "error leading directly to a goal" where errors aren't counted as long as the attackers can't finish.
  12. April could be the worst time to play badly if you want to attract players, a lot of decisions about next seasons are probably made then. If we had been able to extend that winning run a little we would be in a much better position ahead of the summer window IMO. Guardian today write about an uncertain summer coming up for Villa, unclear if they're alluding to transfers or Gerrard's future. They also mention Villa trying to "act like a big club" last summer trying to sign Smith-Rowe. "If Dean Smith was less polite and less of an Aston Villa fan, he might reasonably suggest that his sacking and replacement by Steven Gerrard has not gone well – though his time at Norwich, who he has been unable to rescue, does not prove that the Villa hierarchy necessarily got things wrong." https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2022/apr/29/premier-league-10-things-to-look-out-for-this-weekend
  13. But he has started them together many times. Against Arsenal, Newcastle, Watford, Leeds, Everton and Man United at least.
  14. If that’s what he said I’ll believe it, it just sounds odd to me if the ceo don’t have any input about the signings except for granting the money and negotiating the deals.
  15. I really don’t know, could be people guessing because Purslow allegedly likes big names (not that Ings is such a big name … but still). What you describe is probably how transfer decisions are suppose to be made (although I would think Purslow has a say as well, even if he doesn’t search for candidates). But the formal structure is one thing and reality is sometimes another. People with strong opinions are more influential than others, decisions are sometimes made before the formal meeting is held, and so on.
  16. Yeah I didn’t mean Villa can’t attract, and as you say getting players from other leagues is probably easier. I meant to say that while we want more depth and competition, players will see it the other way. As an example, it’s been difficult for Spurs to sign another striker because that player knows he won’t play much unless Kane leaves.
  17. Having two great players for every position is ideal. The issue for Villa is our place in the foodchain, with no european football and currently unlikely to be near the top of the table. Highly rated players considering Villa will count on playing most games, if they suspect they won’t they might go elsewhere. Being a squad player at Liverpool atm beats being one at Villa, they’re concerned about their image like most people.
  18. Doesn’t Purslow have a similar role to Levy at Spurs (no comparisons between the two apart from the job descriptions)? Hands-on ceo and part owner, has a DoF/sporting director but handles some important things like picking managers.
  19. If Gerrard goes back to playing Buendia and Coutinho together without making adjustments I’d get really pissed off. He has played them together for a number of games and it clearly hasn’t worked, so if he intends to do it again they need different instructions. Otherwise it’ll just be like those games against Newcastle and Watford, with the area outside the box too crowded and our nr 10s trying to play through centrally. Play Buendia by all means, but then Coutinho should be on the bench.
  20. Man City clearly aren’t used to that high press from Madrid’s attackers, in the Prem no teams play like that against them. Ederson and the defenders look shaky when Vinicius comes charging.
  21. This Champions League season is quite dull. The competition needs strong teams from clubs like Real, Barcelona and Bayern to challenge the English teams. Now it’s a predictable road to an inevitable final between two teams playing each other in a bunch of other competitions anyway.
  22. Gerrard will always be good at attracting Liverpool or ex-Liverpool players. And as a new manager in this league, and a legendary player, he might be appealing to others as well. But when players get used to him being a Prem manager, his ability to attract will depend on being successful in the new role. Players will line up to play for a great manager or shy away from a failing one.
  23. But does Zelensky throw his countrymen under the bus after losing a battle?
  24. It’s absolutely true Liverpool’s midfield trio are defensively minded. Villa’s midfield is much more attacking which could be a problem in this system. But while Ramsey may be our best midfielder, he’s also the most attack minded of the three which actually makes him the worst fit.
