Players on a low, sustainable salary are very much more sellable. Jadon Sancho on £340k/week, to take another example, isn’t sellable. Villa may have plans for Barrenechea and Iling Jr, but I’d be surprised If some of those plans didn’t involve sales before June 30.

I’d agree on principle. But how do we know when our Unai is genuinely happy? He’s a without a doubt a coaching genius, the best there is. But that doesn’t mean he always speaks the whole truth and nothing but the truth, like some unspolit child from the Bible.

At least you’re not aftertiming CV. You tell everyone about Villa’s ”ridiculously” good squad depth, then go beserk when a signing slips away: No dressing things up, before or after from you.

First team option in every position yes (unless we’d want Konsa at RB). No senior CB backup whatsoever, only promising ypungsters.

We have known for a long time that Mings has some way back: Prem clubs normally have 4 senior CBs in their squads, We have known we’d go with just 3 until the new year or so. Then Carlos gets injured and our only backup is gone. Pray for the best. If we subtract the strikers (Ollie and Duran) we have 10 senior midfielders or attacking midfielders. With the exception of Buendia, they’re all fit too. What a waste eh?

We also failed to sell Carlos and Dendoncker, and are very thin in defence. Some good in this window, some not so good.

Can’t lie, I’m very worried about him defending but he’ll have to learn quickly as he’s our only option. Also very excited about him as an attacking bulldozer!

Philogene could be our most versatile player, in competition with Rogers possibly. JP can play LW, RW, LM, RM, RWB and LWB without it being strange. He’d probably be a more than decent no 10 too but lets not go there for now.

At least in midfield we have cover. Not worried there personally. Defence is another and sadder story.

Love to see the big man returning! The best ambassador for the club I can even remember. Another thing is how quickly he can return to playing and to what level: Hoping for the best but expecting the worst. If he can’t quickly return to a high Prem level, he’ll quickly be shipped out. Seems our club is being more serious about getting in line with PSR than anyone of us would have thought, or liked. I wouldn’t like to lose Buendia, Then again I REALLY hated to lose Dougie, But que sera sera: If we sign a defender or two, even If only on loan, I’m fine.

We now have Pau, Konsa, Carlos, Mings: Can’t see how that’s 6? Everyone has known Mings wouldn’t be back for the start of the season, or even the first few months: So time to squad plan - we have 3 CBs for the forseeable. Fine, get them gone. But make sure we have 4 useable CBs first, Ideally those backups aren’t played out of position or never played senior football before, If we can shift our theoretical backups, Mings and Carlos, and replace them for half their wages, great.

Without Carlos injury we would have 3 senior CBs: Normally you want 4 in a squad. At least fix a loan. i’m getting angrier at this ”they’ll be back soon” talk by the hour: I don’t normally bitch and whine about the squad, not at all. But ffs:

This is the worst sort of club loyalty, Puré lunacy; Of course players get injured and that’s why you have a squad! The problem now for us, in defence, is we hardly even have a squad. We had 3 senior CBs, with Carlos now out we have 2. Mings and Carlos would be a very nice backup pairing, not arguing against that. But they’re not fit! You talk about how Arsenal squad players aren’t tested in the Prem, but the truth is we’d kill to have Timber and Calafiori as backups, We’d kill to have Dragusin, Gomez or Maguire as backup too (they might start for us though). Out problem remains: we don’t HAVE any backup in defence. If the backup is good enough isn’t even the point, sadly.

Well I agree. Has been coming though, People have been praising our squad depth all summer, which is fair if you look on the attacking side. Our defence is very thin indeed, Even If this Geertruida bloke had signed, we’d have been thin at the back: And now — he didn’t:

Managers are paid to talk shit in situations like that though, ”What we say is absolutely true, until conditions change”. Fans read everything the club says as gospel, that’s pretty naive.

Of course not. Not saying we should sign players just for a few weeks. Most clubs have 4 senior CBs to handle situations like these. We have 3. One of those 3 is apparently now unavailable, which makes things more stressful.

Our "ridiculous squad depth" is quickly becoming a worry at least in defence. With Carlos and Cash out, Mings and Kamara still not fit and Geertruida not signed, we seem to have no more than 2 fit senior CBs. Konsa can't play RB because he's needed in the middle. Ned has to start. And if someone else has to be subbed off in the coming month, I guess Bogarde will play. If anything is ridiculous it's how thin we are in defence. Maybe Rogers can do a job at CB, at least he's tall.
