    I really think a lot of fans have a strange view as to the quality of the professional footballing staff at AVFC. It is often said we are stupid at how we do transfers, negotiate deals, miss out on possible transfers, train our players and team selection. Now, I read that our manager is swayed in his selection of captain by a player running around and energy. Gerrard and the coaches understand football better than anyone on this forum. They have grown up in football and have decades of experience of professional football. They spend every working day with these players and they understand what motivates them and what their strengths and weaknesses are. They talk to these players every working day and they see them in training and they see how they interact with their colleagues. They alos understand how their colleagues view them. To suggest that Gerrard is tipped over the edge by running around and energy is a real insult to the professionalism at AVFC.

    Its even funnier that I haven't seen one comment which says we played fantastic or that we are good for a European place.

    Most players with game time will increase their value. But if game time is to the detriment of the team and the result then game time should not be given imo

    Watkins look awful, at Brentford he was a winger and had 1 good season as a striker. It is just not working out for him at the moment, maybe Critchley is changing his training but something ain't working and Ings has to be ahead of him. Maybe we need a good striker coach? We missed the opportunity to finally sign Benni McCarthy, I see Man Utd gave him a job today as a coach.

    Now, starting 11 is tough but I think SG will admit that too. That is on the back of a good pre season and a number of players are staking a claim for the first team e.g. Bailey, Emi2, Sanson, Chambers, Archer and to a lesser extent Tim & KKH. These are the sort of high class problems I like us to have, for years we were scraping the bottom of the barrel to find players good enough for our starting 11.

    It is such pity that, it just ruins any decent debate as people argue with bias as opposed to what is happening at our club

    When u say something going on, like what? I can't imagine SG has lost the support of Purslow and he has been well supported in the window. Do u think a player revolt?

    If players are told that they are no longer part of the manager's plans for the season and if the club is actively looking to ship them out then I think it is right not include those players in 1st team training etc. Gerrard is doing the right thing here imo

    Yes it would be very very harsh. But I am a huge fan of Poch and I just think he would be absolutely perfect for Villa and our 'project'. These type of managers don't often become available and I would love to see us exploit his current employment status

    I am supportive of Gerrard, just as I was of Smith. I love neither nor loathe either. I just want to see Villa win stuff and compete at the highest level. I also am happy to give Gerrard a decent crack of the whip of getting us there. However, if I was Purslow I would have a word with Pochettino and I would offer him whatever he wanted, if he agree to join us I would sack Gerrard immediately and get Poch in as manager

    I can't see him getting sacked at Christmas to be honest. It would be daft to sack the manager about 7 weeks after our last league game before the world cup break. If he is to be sacked I hope we do it before Pochettino gets a new job

    So in summary, this thread suggests we are shit, we can't play out from the back, our midfield is crap and are strikers can't score. Oh, and we have the wrong manager and captain. I guess beating one of the better teams from Ligue 1 on their turf is a confusing result for many

    Lucky you, I would have enjoyed going to a pre season game in Aus. Most preseason games feel a bit like that though. With often 11 subs at h/t and with the manager trying out new things and players getting up to speed I would be very surprised to see sexy flowing football.

    I agree about it becoming more about the 16 than the 11. However, I think the 5 subs will take a lot of getting used to for manager. Although, we are allowed 5, we are only allowed 3 occasions to make substitutions. So there will need to be multiple subs of 2 players or more. This may be more difficult to do without upsetting the flow of the game too much. It will be interesting to see how it works out

    OldVillan has a sister that works in EU law in some form or other and said Sangare is a done deal but is tied up with some legal issue regarding his registration

    I agree Kaen would be a risk, but for 2 of the seasons that contribute to those stats he was still a teenager. He is still a kid but just one that made it to the big time at a very young age. He looks a real handful of a player to me and I think would be a great sub to bring on in the 2nd half. I would like to take the chance on a loan for him

    And no doubt Jamie Vardy will be knocking on BR's door saying he needs a 3m pay rise as his Mrs ran up a few unexpected bills

    Yep, I think that would be my preferred pairing for the 23/24 season. Therefore, for this season if we are to purchase another DM it would make sense to get a player that can play 6 and 8 which makes Sangare the ideal candidate imo. I hope OldVillan is right with his ITK

    I don't like seeing players get injured, regardless who they play for, but on a positive this should rule him out of a move to Villa (if it was ever actually on)

    Yeah, that is a valid point, I think it is highlighting that our midfield needs improving. I am kind of hoping that with a proper DM it will help push Doug into a more natural 8 and give him and the others a little more time on the ball to show their skills. I still have high hopes for Sanson. I think whatever extra improvement we do this summer will benefit thee team and will will be better this season. It will probably be next summer when we can make some signings that turn us into a good team that deserves its place fighting for a European spot
