  1. How is it weird? Do u get the concept of building a team and working your way up to competing for Europe, it is not possible to do that in a few transfer windows. Were were a Championship club 4 seasons ago and now we consider ourselves as a safe PL: club and competing for top half. Bear in mind top hald means in the top 10 teams and 6 of those places are already accounted for. So we are fighting for 1 of 4 places. I assume that is just an anti Gerrard comment
  2. Are u sure, do u have a link? At the dinner in Australian Purslow is quoted as saying the following. That doesn't sound like the objective is to finish 7th this season https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-man-utd-purslow-24558331
  3. There are a few reason we can do it now imo. Firstly, FFP is definitely something Villa has to be carful of. We have spent a fortune since we came up and have huge annual amortisation costs to pay. We are still paying about 5m a year in amortisation each year for Wesley. Secondly, we are massively. increasing our wage bill. When we came up I think our highest earner was on 40k/50k and then we put Jack onto about 75k. Now we have multiple players on 120k+ a week. All of these costs have to be accounted for in every financial year and not just the year we sign the player. Thirdly, we need to grow the attraction of Villa for the better players to join us. Gerrard has really helped with this and we are now signing players that a lot of us did not think possible to sign. To move further up the food chain we need to build a team that is attractive to players to join. The big thing we are missing now is a top half finish in the PL. When we get that we will make ourselves more attractive and closer to the 40m/50m bracket. What teams are getting further away from us, yes the top 6, but we simply can't compete with them yet, we need to climb a few more rungs up the ladder before we can. I don't see any team outside the top 6 that has pulled away from us. The only candidate is West Ham and I still don't think they have pulled away, we have at least maintained our gap in quality to them. Yes Purslow was disappointed with not finishing in Europe, that doesn't mean it was an objective and it would have been really dumb if it was an objective. We are in the mix for clubs fighting for a European spot and if we don't make it it will be disappointing. I agree that money doesn't necessarily mean a better quality player and there are loads of example of where it hasn't, however, there is no denying the correlation between higher transfer fee and a better quality player.
  4. The better our financials going into next summer means the more we can spend. We are currently a 20m/30m transfer fee club, wouldn't it be nice to see that ramp up to 40m/50m
  5. That's why Purslow gets paid the big bucks, instantly u accept to 500k over 4 years. You should be walking out the door if he doesn't agree to 2m upfront or 600k a year.
  6. Yeah, but would u agree to instalments of 500k a year for the next 4 years?
  7. They say they want to get into Europe but they don't say it has to happen at the end of next season. We spent early so we could get our players into the Villa setup and get full preseasons and give them time to relocate etc. Other clubs have not caught up with this as they missed the boat by not signing when we did. That was obviously our strategy from the start and they delivered on it. I expect to see one more signing but that may require a departure first. I am fairly confident that the summer transfer window is exactly to plan.
  8. Yeah, Gallagher as a McGinn upgrade makes sense. I just watched the transfer show on Sky where they were saying Man Utd should have bought Kamara and in 3 weeks time people will realise just how good Kamara is
  9. Thanks for the detailed response, it makes a lot of sense. It is sort of what I am thinking but your knowledge of the game clearly exceeds mine and you got your point across in much fewer words than I would have. From what I have seen of Sangare he may be a step in the right direction to that Alonso role. It also makes me think that Gallagher would probably be a little too light weight and not the right type of player, yet there are many calls for us to get him. Again, thx for putting the effort into the response
  10. It helps that Milan missed out on Chuk and didn't get him on a free next year, it may make them think twice about trying the same with Doug. And clearly Purslow didn't bottle the negotiation and take a low bid and showed he was prepared to let him leave on a free next year if our valuation was not met.
  11. yes i know u said, up to 18 months, it was difficult to get across my point without sounding like a dick. I am just trying to say I think he will be gone in 6 months or we will have him for a few years imo
  12. I do agree with you, but in defence of the club's transfer business. We got promoted and invested in players to keep us in the PL it worked (just about). We are now in a position where not one single pundit / media outlet / bookie has us anywhere near being a relegation candidate this year. So at a high level, we are getting a certain amount of our transfer right. Yes, we have spent a bit over 300m on players since we came up (on this occasion net spend is the correct one to use) and we have had revenues of over 400m. Yes I know we have wages and other fees but I think NSWE and Purslow will be quite happy with what we have achieved. Also, we have now got quite a valuable team. When we were promoted there was only Jack and McGinn that had any resale value. When we were promoted the two teams that got automatic promotion are now back in the Championship (Norwich & Blades)
  13. Very true. The obsession with the transfer window is quite strong. We haven't spent enough / got enough players / net spend is too low etc, the transfer window is a sport in its own right
  14. I don''t think Gerrard will go in the 18 month timeframe. If he is not up to the job he will be gone at the WC break imo. If he lasts for the next 18 months then I am thinking he will be doing a lot right and wont be sacked and will be here for a few years
  15. If they thump us 4-0 we can have a good laugh at him for getting his prediction wrong. There is a positive in everything if u look hard enough
  16. I am not trying to pin you to name players as that is daft, Lange and co must do that. But what type of players would u see as the missing link. I would like Sangare or similar. I don't think we need another striker now that Archer has been confirmed as 1st team
  17. I would shut it for both buy and sell and then European clubs can't buy any players from the clubs that have the window shut
  18. I don't think we need any more but I would love to see us announce Sangare. The logic of a football fan
  19. I think the reason clubs moaned was that they didn't have time to replace players that were sold, but that argument doesn't make sense as it is the same for whatever date the window is going to slam shut
  20. I always believe the window should slam shut before the 1st game, its crazy that it doesn't. But remember the good old days when the transfer window was open 365 days a year and bigger clubs could see a form player and just waltz in and take him. To me its a bit like smoking in restaurants and bars, its hard to believe it used to be allowed. This window is also impact a little more as the season is starting that bit early due to the WC
  21. If we can get rid of Hause, Davis, Traore, Guilbert and El Gahazi it will have been a bloody good window
  22. If u are not including DMs I think a few could be removed from the list above. I don't know all of the players positions but a few stand out: Neves, Soucek and Chowdhury are definitely DMs and Almiron is a winger like Traore
