I’m noticing a lot of comments along the lines of “I totally trust Unai’s opinion/judgement on (insert topic/player name) but”.

Stop talking. There is no but. He has got everything right so far, he knows far more than you or I will ever know about the game, and he knows our squad and what they are capable of.

Baring in mind the changes and complexity of modern football, he is the most skilled manager/head coach that we have ever had at our club, if you say you trust him then trust him.

Same with the transfers too, which I’m also guilty of!

No one really thought we needed to prioritise a high level CB like Pau Torres but now all has become clear.

If we don’t overplay him, we’ll have some player on our hands.

I think this is a great point, after the last few seasons he will probably appreciate some rotation so i'm not too worried about having him, Dougie and Kamara to choose from

I don’t think you can argue that he’s been a revelation. A superb manager. The high line worries me a bit but he’s without doubt the best manager we’ve had at the club for a long, long time.

I’m just, at present, not in full agreement that this has been a great window. I think it’s been ok, good even, but there’s just this feeling gnawing away at me that we’re not THAT much stronger. Maybe I’m being glass half full.

At the start of the window, I’d have said our main priorities were Support Striker, Wide player, Right Back and Back up GK. So far we’ve signed Diaby, who I assume is the wide player in that scenario, and a CM and CB. I get that as a squad we will be stronger for it, but I feel we haven’t improved the pressing areas (of course that might change). Does Torres get in ahead of Mings? Sure, on paper he might do but he may struggle to adapt. Does Tielemans start ahead of Kamara, Luiz and McGinn in central midfield - not sure. Diaby looks to be a fantastic signing. It’s highly likely we’ll be starting with Cash at right back, Olsen in some cup games and one of Buendia/Bailey/Coutinho most of the time.

Like I say, good window in many respects, just would have preferred a new support striker and right back above most. Hopefully we can move a few on and do some business. Somebody like a Doku/Felix level signing and I’d be over the moon.

You can argue against all of the points above and it does come across very glass half empty. Tin hat on.

My counter to this would be that Emery knows the positions he wants to improve and will be backed to do so accordingly.

If we don’t target those areas (I still think we may) then they can’t have been a priority imo.

Luiz will sign contract while you all shit yourself about him leaving ✔️

Diaby will sign while you all piss yourself about Saudi’s taking over football ✔️

I can imagine it being very tough for Tonali but he was a regular stater for AC Milan, Ferran on the other hand can’t get sniff of first team football at Barca , I think he’s just digging his heels in and refusing to be bullied out of the club opposed to not wanting to come here.

Plus he just looks very inexpressive, there's a photo of him on a yacht with his unreal wife and he's just sat there boiling piss

If that's true then yes the figure is more like £75m, but I've read that Diaby is set to cost £51.9m all in after add ons. The BBC and Guardian both reported £43.2m + £8.6m in add ons. Ornstein may be correct over both those sources, but his figure (£34.6m) + the add ons figure (£8.6m) actually comes to £43.2m. So I suspect the figures have been misconstrued and it is actually the higher figure of £43.2m we have actually paid + the add ons.

I trust Ornstein over those two sources...

But surely loaning him out endlessly until he runs his contract down and leaves for free is just as bad from a FFP perspective? At least this way his wages are gone.

Yeah that's true actually, be a £4.4m hit this year or next i guess, plus no wages, you're right

We wanted rid of him though

That's what i'm trying to figure out though, we can't have wanted him out that badly to impact our FFP by a decent amount...
