I'm always of the opinion that young players should never be relied on. Certainly not until they've played at least a season at the top level and a healthy number of appearances.
We should be signing two new midfielders with the strategy being to allow Tim to work his way into the side rather than telling him he's starting next season alongside a new defensive midfielder. The club need to go out and sign two new defensive midfielders this Summer, relegating McGinn to a squad player and competing with Iroegbunam to get into the side.
Yes, he looks very promising and I look forward to seeing more of his integration to the squad but at this stage in his career he’s not the answer to our prayers. Hopefully some more minutes before this season ends, next season will be his true breakout season and he becomes a regular after that. I’m not against starting him against Norwich though, will be a good test for him.

He gets all his minutes against lower PL teams or when the game is already won
its a short career - he won’t get this time back sitting around on the bench
Peps reluctance to trust him will also put an England starting spot back
Sad
So what? No way is he regretting the move.

I was wondering if Villa would do this given he signed his previous contract not too long ago.
It has quite important ramifications for next season. We know a "#6" is coveted, I think it's clear Luiz will be sold. I wouldn't be at all surprised if McGinn is benched or sold also. If we went into next season with a midfield three of McGinn, Ramsey and "#6" its not much of an upgrade on what we have. It needs overhauling and if Ramsey is the future, McGinn may not be the present.
I think Sanson will leave, McGinn will stay but get rotated a lot more. Luiz will also go and we’ll see two new incoming midfielders.

Part of my issue with Gerrard is that it still feels like he's a Liverpool player. I haven't been able to separate the Liverpool Gerrard from the manager Gerrard and it feels like he isn't really our manager but just being allowed to sit in our manager's chair because he's PL royalty. This is my problem and nothing to do with Gerrard, but the constant talk about Liverpool from him and him recently playing football in a Liverpool shirt has not helped.
It doesn't feel like he's our manager. I don't believe him when he says he's delighted to be at a big club like Aston Villa and I feel no affiliation with the Gerrard Villa. And i don't think I'm the only one who has this feeling about him
I can see where you’re coming from a bit but he doesn’t constantly talk about Liverpool, he gets constantly asked about Liverpool and he shuts it down as quick as he can. He played in a charity match, no big deal.

Yes,they will be fighting for their PL lives, but are the team/players any good ?A teams position in the league table shows their real ability compared to the other teame in the PL.
There’d never be an upset or surprise result if other factors didn’t come into play. It’s our job to make sure our quality shows but I don’t think it will be as easy as the away fixture.

Don’t care about the score, a win is a win. Norwich have got some fight in them yet and Deano will have a score to settle so they will be even more fired up. I think it will be an uncomfortable win. That’s fine, just don’t lose.

Him and Gray.
Not sure about Gray, think his form dropped off but I did forget about DCL who some teams may want.

Despite the diving Gordon has been brilliant. Constant threat when he gets the ball.
They’ll have to sell him if they go down, he’s their only real asset.

Conundrum for Everton, do they make an attacking sub to try and chase an unlikely point or try and keep their goal difference down?
-
Pickford not winking anymore.

Luiz Diaz is brilliant.

That's a foul by Matip on Gordon surely?
It would have been down the other end.

Liverpool looking bang average today.

Because it inflates current form just like when people argued about Smiths 2021 form yet you could argue Smith got 55 points in 20/21 season so why isn’t that included. Then Smith only got sacked in 11 games of the new season after a fabulous 20/21 seasons points haul. But that doesn’t hold much water does it because he got judged on the poor form run just like Gerrard should on the last 15 games. You can always include the good run before the poor form but that inflates the poor current run. In the last 15 games he has 15 points.
Surely the fairest thing is to look at the whole picture not just the part of the picture you want to make your argument. He started well, then we slumped, then hit some form again, then slumped again. Hopefully we’ll win a couple more. So we’re basically an inconsistent mid table team. We know this. He needs to do better but taking out the good run to make him/us appear worse isn’t right either. Like I said, a new manager bounce doesn’t automatically happen to everyone. It shouldn’t be discounted.

Excellent post and IMO further proof at how desperate Purslow was to get Gerrard.
It was a good post but Brentford isn’t probably the best example as Smith left them in a good place I think and Frank was his assistant so no ship to steady as such. Most managerial replacements aren’t so smooth.

Shame that form table only looks good including the initial managerial bounce. Take that out and we have 15 points from the last 15 league games plus knocked out the cup and we are further down the form table.
But why should we take it out? It happened, they were real well earned points. Not every manager gets the bounce effect. We didn’t allow Duncan Ferguson or Jesse Marsch theirs.

He's Brazil's no.10. But he needs to be in a team of equal talents - he doesn't scrap like Buendia and unless we sign 4 brand new uber talents then I don't see how Coutinho fits- and that's gonna be a massive tragedy for us.
I’ve got a feeling we’re going to see him go to a team who can retain the ball better and flourish again. Hopefully not in the PL.

It's really weird. Our 3 summer signings with the Grealish money, it looks like 2 will be moved on in the summer because the manager doesn't fancy them. It doesn't make sense. Either the Grealish debacle has shaken our higher ups into making hasty decisions completely out of character or this really is some sort of vanity project by Purslow as people have been suggesting.
I think it’s the former to be fair. I think Purslow has looked to Gerrard and Coutinho to improve our attractiveness and commercial appeal which is logical but the Bailey and Ings transfers were panic buys after our entire summer plans went wrong. Probably a conversation for another thread though.

5 minutes ago, Keyblade said:One thing that doesn't sit right with me is the notion that this isn't "his team". I was under the impression that we moved to a more "continental" model as it were, as a club. In that we have a model for the profile of player that we bring to the club, to fit a certain template or style of play. The idea being that no one staff member is irreplaceable. We can sack the head coach and bring in another to pick up where he left off and continue in the same vein. Think Brentford for example. Smith leaves, Frank replaces him and the club doesn't miss a beat.
But apparently now, after just the first managerial change under this new model, we need a huge squad clear out/overhaul and to spend a bunch of money to suit the manager and his style, when we've been led to believe it's supposed to be the other way around. This is the very thing that led to our downfall under Lerner, and what buried teams like Sunderland and why Everton currently look like they're headed the same way.
Again, this isn't a knock on Gerrard at all, as I know people are super defensive over the guy for some reason. This is me questioning our ownership/higher ups, for the first time in 3 years really.
Totally valid point. Buendia who cost us 40 million pounds and was finally hitting form is now sidelined for a player who probably won’t be here next season. 30 million pound winger Bailey now finds himself playing in a system with no wingers (albeit he looks like he’d struggle at the moment no matter how we played). The theres the Ings/Watkins debacle. Letting Targett go to a rival. We have made some odd choices as a club in the last 12 months, maybe hiring a manager who is desperate to play a system that doesn’t suit many of our current playing staff and promising him a load of cash was one of them.

Believe it or not, I’m not actually convinced by Gerrard either and I’m not a happy clapper, I have concerns re how poor we now look, formation etc but when there’s been people on here who have slated him since day one and many who have spent the last two weeks of no football going round and round in toxic circles until it all becomes disproportionate, it makes me want to add a bit of balance. I made a comment about one poster not being happy with him unless we won the league, I don’t think all critical posters think that, just the one who actively and openly despises him.
It hasn’t helped that Newcastle are doing so well but their resurgence is as unusual as it is exceptional. I think they have benefitted from the feeling of togetherness they now have whereas half of ours must be reading daily about big summer shake ups and mass exoduses and playing for their futures etc. Gerrard hasn’t helped that but equally I think some of these players have been half arsed or just rubbish for months and should be held accountable.
My problem with those going so heavily against Gerrard is when the sticks they use to beat him with are touted as facts but are just not true.

It's not baseless shit at all.
He isn't (imo) a very likeable guy - and the results have been iffy - even the CEO said he was looking forward to a strong 2nd half of the season.
Clock up loses and the fans will get restless - that just how football is in 2022.
But you’ve made it quite clear that short of wining the league/fa cup/massively exceeding expectations/ there is nothing that he could do that would make you like him. That’s not how football is even in 2022, that’s your own problem with him.

It probably would have been less awkward were we several places higher and feeling a lot happier as a ‘post Smith’ Aston Villa fan.
Me- I think it’s great but I still hope we stuff them and everyone is singing Gerrards name at the end.
