For sure. I wpuld be tempted to start him against Norwicb.
It is next season where we are going to see more and more of our kids. The 5 subs rule is going to be to our advantage in giving them first team experience .
Agreed. I think Tim gave us better balance in the midfield when he came on, he had a presence and covered space really well (albeit it was only for a few minutes). I do not think he will start against Norwich though.

I liked the cameo. Do you think he will get a start in the coming games?

Same. I just wouldn't care if isn't with Villa. I want him to succeed here, why does he have to move to realise his potential?

I was with you until this, they dwarf us in wealth, their ambitions will be larger and they've already over taken us in the league, they'll be fighting to be up there quickly
I have no doubt they have big ambitions and a large wealth fund. Their wealth means very little now with the regulations in place and them being able to access that wealth through linked sponsorships etc. NSWE have big ambitions too but because it is associated with little Ol' Aston Villa - it means nothing to the media. Newcastle are also walking a political tightrope with the Saudi links too. The current league table means nothing imo, we haven't played in 10 days and they have played twice. I am backing NSWE against the Saudi boys. I have no doubt Newcastle will be a challenger now but not a destroyer. They won't be like City IMO.

What did Chambers do to get dropped? What did Sanson do to get dropped?
Why would this be any different for Targett when we paid 25 million for a left back. How would he dare ask for more money in the summer if he had his major signing sitting on the bench for a player we already had. Targett never had a chance to compete. It was a rigged competition
Wasn't Chambers injured against West Ham? I am guessing that not winning was probably the reason those players did not retain their place. I want to see more of Sanson too but Gerrard obviously favours McGinn & Ramsey more. I believe Targett did not want to compete. He saw signing Digne as a demotion and Newcastle as a good opportunity for himself. Fair enough.

yes but Digne will automatically start when fit is the issue just like Konsa and McGinn
Chambers took Konsa's spot at Leeds so not entirely true. Targett could have won Gerrard over, it was a case of him not wanting to stay and fight for his spot imo.

Well no Chambers and Sanson have done nothing wrong and got dropped for very little. Same would have happened to Targett if he stayed and played well
Targett would have played a fair bit with all of Digne's injuries

yet seems to start the same players regardless of how poor they play
Is that giving us a clue on how bad the squad is (from Gerrard's perspective)?

We are a premier league club, we should have never been in that league in the first place. It will be a very long time until we get relegated again IMO.

If Gerrard rated him, he wouldn't have signed Digne.
Possibly true. But Gerrard did say he likes to have two very good players competing for spots.

I am not getting this big fear of Newcastle - I don't think they will be anything like City were in those early years. I know people believe they destroyed our ambitions under Lerner, but I think they did far worse to Arsenal. Nevertheless, football has completely changed with the rules & regs in place too. The Premier League will be itching to punish Newcastle if they step out of line IMO. I think they are similar to us in terms of ambition and wealth, it is an equal footing. It will be a slow builder. But I think the big advantage they have over us is the media, the media sure do love them though. We never get any credit by the media or attention (not a peep on Villa Park expansion plans!).

He's obviously a good player, maybe he just won't be a good fit in this new era and it's time for him to move on for the sake of his career. He'll have a very good career though, he's too good not to.
Couldn't care less if it isn't with Villa.

Not entirely true. Matty didn't fancy competing with Digne, which is fair enough.

What do we want in the coming seasons? I want more than developing individuals who will eventually leave after we have built the world around them. This next phase isn't necessarily about developing players, it is about us developing a team that can move us up the table and back into Europe. That is what Gerrard wants, and I share his opinion. We require a strong "team", not sitting 15th and developing Ramsey for Man City - I am sick to death of being that club. This might mean - more short term, ready made players to get quick results. So be it.
For argument's sake, I think Cash & Ramsey have kicked on under Gerrard but it has only been a few months. It is unfair to judge Gerrard's five months vs Smith's three years. I think we will need to be patient to see the fruits of Gerrard's coaching/management, five months is far too short.

A manager can't just come in and say 'my team plays this way and we will play this way regardless of the fortunes of the team and we will completely overhaul the side to make it work'. The manager has to adapt to his tool box to get the best result.
Gerrard doesn't, really. He's switched to a 2 striker system, which hasn't been a roaring success but is utilising the squad in a way he doesn't really want to. But he will not shift on the thing that undoes us, the fullbacks being heavily attacking, despite us not having elite level fullbacks or a midfield that can support that system. He has a squad that has a focus on wide forwards/wingers and tidy midfielders, which, yes is unbalanced and clearly still being built, but he just rejects wingers and sticks with the same midfield with the same tactics every week that isn't working.
I'm not terribly impressed. When it clicks it's decent. But it's very all or nothing - we turn up or we don't. And it really does feel like he needs a very specific set of players to play the way he wants to, and there's no guarantee even then it'll work. And he evidently has a first choice XI and everyone else. And I really haven't seen much to feel confident that this is the home to chuck money at.
I want him to succeed, because he's Villa manager. And on paper I like the way he wants us to play. But I'm not convinced it'll work, and I'm not convinced he's s good enough manager to do anything else when it doesn't. Kicking a rocket to the arse of the team at half time they other week isn't the hallmark of a good manager in the making IMO.
I am not fully convinced that our problem is with playing advanced full backs, we have produced good attacking play with this set-up (albeit inconsistent). That is a work in progress imo. I think the main issue is the defensive side of our system and the mentality we have in games. We just roll over and die a lot of the time. We are too easy to play through because we currently lack running power, aggression and concentration that you need to be a top side. I think Gerrard sees this and I agree with him.
I believe SG has inherited an imbalanced squad of players too - which Lange and Smith have to take some responsibility for. it is now on Gerrard to find the solutions and build this new mentality with support from the board. Players have to step up or move on. Similarly, we are in the same territory we were in when MON began to alter the mentality of O'Leary's squad, we need the same kind of transition here again. This will be the true test of his managerial ability.

Is he fit for the Baggies?

I can honestly see them not existing in 5-10 years time.

Yes it does come across as a bit disingenuous when he says it, usually in the same sentence as basically calling the players shit and in need of replacing.
He has a lot in common with the fans then.

Why would the club veto it ?
£33m doesn't seem out of bounds for NSWE - and the wages we were talking for Grealish I think would be enough for Countinho.
The club actively "future proofing"? The board may asking questions about Carney's future in the first team and Buendia too? Plus investment in other areas of the team too. The ideal scenario for Villa is negotiating down the fee and wages, so we can further improve other areas of the club too. This is surely a good thing for the overall health of the club?

I read the Coutinho stuff on Newsnow - apparently Barcelona want answers this week on Coutinho. Doubts about whether we are going to pay the 33 million and we may want to pay less than originally suggested.

Really I've not heard that ?....
I wonder if we are getting our 'no' in early before he snubs us !
Who knows? Coutinho may have a better offer elsewhere or/and maybe the club sees the money being used better in other areas to improve the side.

SG certainly needs to improve the defensive spine. There is talk now that we do not want to sign Coutinho or pay Barcelona the 33 million pound fee, so maybe Gerrard feels he can improve in the team to make us a more well rounded unit with the additional money.

The motivation has to be finishing in the top 10.

I've always found this a weird cliché. Teams perform above or below their relative abilities every season.
Sheffield Utd being a strong example in recent years.

Yeah. Gone are the days when we had 23 year old Jordan Lyden winning an u18 trophy ( in which he celebrated on Instagram like a world cup ) but him being classed as a young player. Then he is loaned out to a lower league club with a big ego because the club didn't manage his development correctly.
Full credit to Mark Harrison. I don't think we will see the true fruits of his work until later too, possibly five years down the line. Very positive indeed.
