This might not go down to well but I actually think a similar approach abroad in the transfer market as the year we got relegated wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world We signed some very good players from Europe but played them alongside some very inept players that frankly couldn’t give a shit. Gueye and Ayew were our best players and you could see the potential in Amavi, Veretout and Adama. Gestede wasn’t good enough and the likes of Guzan, Gabby, Richards, Lescott and even Hutton were a disgrace the way they strutted around the pitch. I was actually quite excited at the start of that season and thought we would get top 10. Shows what I know. Must get the balance right.

Glen Murray is a great example of that. 35 and it’s his goals that have arguably kept Brighton up for the last 2 seasons.

Yeah that too. My Atletico example was down to the fact they turned a lot of unknowns or good players in to stars. They were a big club struggling for several years which included relegation. They also had to sell their best players each season. Their wage bill the season they won the league was lower than ours the season we got relegated. Its comforting to know our DOF played a part in where they are today.

Agree. One or two experienced but once world class players won’t hurt. Dzeko is a class act and always seemed like a top professional.

Smith didn’t try to get the best out of Hogan either. He just had a purple patch and got a big move from it. Won’t be the first or the last striker that has happened to.

Would love to see Mitrovic. Was unplayable at times last season. Just not sure he has the right character.

Amazingly he has made 129 premier league appearances and never got relegated.

Just looked at Cardiff’s signings last summer and on paper they looked decent. It’s shows how hard the league is.

Can’t see us getting Abraham or Axel. Agree with the rest in terms of a first 11.

The problem is pretty much every top flight teams wants to play this way these days. Signings the right players is crucial. I’m looking at the job Suso did at Atletico Madrid to help get them back where they belong and hoping we can do something similar. Edit: relatively speaking of course. I’m not expecting us to be champions jus yet.

Sounds like the striker equivalence of Richards and Lescott. There is a reason they are both available on a free.

He may be a short guy but he seems like a very powerful character. I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of him. Would have loved to seen his first meeting with Bruce. Would have been interesting.

Who says we won’t play that way against top 6 teams? Whether you’ve meant it or not I think you’ve turned Smiths comments of trying to win every game in to negative mate.

Did we even do this? I watched a team that defended together as a unit when didn’t have the ball and kept it well when they did. We wont have as much of the ball against top teams and the emphasis will be on a counter attacking style. But this idea that we play ‘attack’ ‘attack’ ‘attack’ is not accurate in my opinion.

How many goals have we conceded since beating derby 4-0? You give our defensive side no credit. We do need a new defensive midfielder though desperately.

I actually agree with you to an extent. But trying to win games doesn’t mean all out attack. You’ve interpreted Smiths comments as playing open attacking football against the top 6 and getting spanked. I see it as not fearing any team and having the mindset to try and win the game.
