It's the future of football, imo.

Long term managers are brilliant if you can find them. But it's become very rare.

All it does is encourage gambles. Clubs avoid experienced manager who have a ceiling because they ultimately want to go beyond that ceiling. But to do that they employ a gamble of a manager who MIGHT have a higher ceiling, but with nothing to base that on.

Remi Garde, Tim Sherwood, Paul Lambert, Alex McLeish were all "long term" appointments, and all risks. None of them paid off.

The club needs a long term plan/philosophy. The manager has to fit into that, but not for the duration.

Jose Mourinho has a shelf life of 3 years but he'll win trophies. How many managers last that long these days? It's the club philosophy that needs addressing so we don't go back to square one everytime. Under Lerner we have flip flopped from one idea to the next we need a long term plan.

Too early to predict pending the takeover?

    Well what can we predict?

The takeover is not yet complete and will not be for a few days yet. - yes we can predict that

We have no manager in place and the squad needs a complete change - yes we can also predict this

The league campaign starts in 10 weeks and whatever squad we have needs preparing including friendly games and coaching from a coaching set up we also do not have - yes that can be predicted too.

So given what we can predict which is uncertainty until a takeover is complete ,  and to be honest a degree of uncertainty after that as well,  I think it is fair to say that we will not land running at the start of the season and will be playing catchup and actually precisely because we do not know the squad make up or ownership or managerial team that means there are far too many uncertainties for us to expect a promotion push next season.  Just too many things have to come together quickly and be positive for that to happen. Tick tock

Well seeing as at present there's no players at BMH that need coaching I don't see it being a problem. We have about 4 weeks until the players  return and I guarantee we will have a new owner and manager in place by then. With our current squad and a decent manager we will be pushing for minimum playoffs. The Championship is full of crap teams. Sheffield Wed aren't a good side yet got to the Playoff Final. Blues were pushing for playoffs until late in the season. There isn't too many things to come together. It's just we need the first one to happen to start the domino effect. We will be pushing for promotion it's just a case of how high up we finish up. Top 6 is easily achievable but the next few weeks will determine if we can go for automatic.

  3. As most say it's too early to predict next season until the TO is complete or should I say the squad is in place but just going off our current squad we would be fighting for promotion. I expect there to be a big turnover and for our squad to be a lot better next season so going off of that we will be up there. The only only thing is will it be automatic or play offs.

I think as Scott as said above Hollis’s whole remit was to sell the club. That is what he came into the club to do and that his where his expertise lay. He doesn't have any experience in terms of running a football club aside from the few months he has been here where as far as we know he hasn't dealt with any player contracts, he hasn't been involved in buying and selling any players, he hasn't been involved in making arrangements for pre-season. The football part of the operation was going to be down to Bernstein to oversee.

I don’t see what use Hollis would be to the club if he was kept on and I’d like to think Xia has much better people ready to come in and run the club than Steve Hollis. That is not to put Hollis down by the way as if he has sold the club then he has done his job well.

Hollis appointed people to do the jobs he isn't good at King,Bernstein and Bevington for me that shows he isn't a fool even though they've all left now. I'd like him to hang around for the summer just so it's a smooth handover and things are moved forward quickly. I doubt Hollis was brought in too solely sell the club. We don't know for sure who will be brought onto the board and I think his knowledge may come in handy especially as we need to act fast this summer. We need new everything up and running in next to no time. It's going to be an interesting summer and we can't mess it up.

  5. The league has loads of crap in it. Blues were fighting for the play offs until the last couple of months and they're awful. We have decent players who had zero confidence for 2/3 of the season. A lot will depend on who stays and goes but at present there's not many better squads in the league. Get a good manager in and we will be in play offs at least hopefully pushing for top 2.

Not at all, I'm debating (as I have for a while) that RDM's champions league success shouldn't be overlooked - as some posters seem to be doing that. I had you down in that bracket when you said it wasn't his team. Apologies if I have misread that.

Just read all the post before hand. My worry about RDM is we need a bit of a rebuild he can obviously get players in the right frame of mind to perform but we have some that need kicking out and an example shown throughout the club. He hasn't been anywhere long enough to do that so its unproven. Give him a good squad and he'll get us up We haven't got that at the minute.

So it was AVB that won the CL?

Weren't chelsea 3-1 down to Napoli after a last 16 first leg tie?

Also, wasn't RDM the assistant all season. Fair to say he had some influence on the squad?

But let's think about your point regarding GARDE. Your basically saying that Garde shouldn't be shouldered with the blame for relegation because it wasn't his squad. It's a belief that goes across football that managers should be given a bit of leeway for not achieving goals with squads that aren't there's....... Garde is an example. Klopp etc.

With that in mind, shouldn't RDM be given more credit for succeeding with a squad that wasn't his.

Or should would we just take each scenario on its own merit and throw in a bit of common sense for good measure.

Chelsea were 3-1 down to napoli I believe. He brought back terry, lamps and a couple of others for the 2nd leg. Had been left out by AVB. And they ended up battering napoli 4-1 or something.

I think it's fair to say that RDM played his part in the CL win.

So NO you never read the rest of the post!! If you're only going to highlight segments of a post to argue against why bother?? RDM never bought the players he never built the team but he got them playing after the players fell out with AVB which is what I said! I wasn't basically saying anything I asked a question but again you pick segments. You're basically saying RDM can bring back Gabby Richards and Guzan and we'll win the Championship?

Had Garde had lead us to safety, would he have not deserved massive credit for that? Hypothetically of course.

I'm not a huge RDM fan by any stretch, I have serious doubts for many reasons, but the clamour to diminish his achievements is quite strange.

I think you've missed the point I said it wasn't his team but he managed to get the excisting players to perform so deserved credit for that.

    Whose was it then?

Did you read the rest of the post?? RDM took over with a few months left. He never assembled the squad. Was it Blacks team that got relegated? Or Garde's? Or Sherwoods?

I have a feeling, based on nothing, that we will be paying the worst offenders off if nobody comes in very quickly. Guzan, Richards, Lescott, Richardson, and Ageatsomore will all go straight away I think.

I maybe in the minority but I'd keep Lescott but can see him going to the US along with Guzan. Richardson out of contract Fat Sam may go for Richards then we have Mr Villa hopefully Xia buys a Chinese club and puts him to work over there!!

Keith Wyness - looks to be CEO. I m ok with that - has done it at Everton - whilst not universally popular, guys in this role rarely are - unless they are persistently throwing biilions at it

    XIA - Owner Chairman

Chris Samuleson - Deputy CEO - hope we hear very little from him !!!

Brain Little - Interesting - would be a popular choice with fans. But having so publicly nailed his colours to the English manager mask , he would imo be a token gesture on the board - Will Little accept such a role. He might in the short term.

Looks like we will have a recruitment specialist\dof\head of recruitment - no idea who that will be.

I think you're wrong on Little it wasn't an English manager per se more someone with Championship experience. Hopefully he stays as it gives the fans a link and someone who actually loves the club a say.

The difficulty of the job, imo, depends on the players we keep from this season.

If we keep most or all of:

Clark, okore, Amavi, Gana, Veretout, Grealish, Gil, Adama, Ayew, Gestede

and add youngsters and loanees such as

Gardner, Hepburn Murphy, Toner, Steer etc

Then I don't think the job is as massive as some are making out.

HOWEVER, the more of those players listed above we lose, the harder the job becomes.

Getting rid of the bad influences is as important as keeping the ones we want and maybe harder to achieve!!

  13. RDM wouldn't be my choice but he does seem to have an initial effect on squads. It wasn't his team that won the CL and FA Cup And tactically I don't think he did much but he got the players playing well. He did the same at WBA and MK Dons. I believe if we keep the players we want to and add in the positions that need addressing he can have a positive influence on the squad once the bad apples are kicked out. We have the nucleus of a decent squad if they don't jump ship. If we add 5/6 exp Championship players we will be up there.

  14. He is more than good enough to be our starting CB next year. He is still learning and probably could do with an experienced CB alongside him but I hope he stays and signs a new contract

agreed, as horrible as it is, they are not going to be needed to work at games that are expected to drum up our lowest average attendance in history throughout next season

What?? Lowest average attendance in history? I think you'll be surprised. We have had hardly any wins at home in the last 4/5 years and we'll probably match the amount we did next season! We have a new owner (hopefully) and with the appointment of a decent manager the crowds will be there. Most fans go to watch the Villa not because it's in the PL but because we are fans. We will easily have 35000 next year if we have a glimmer of success. Xia has said the Newcastle game was a big factor in getting the deal signed. If he is true to his word we might have some good times back at VP.

I wouldn't call it luck. They went for Benitez mid season - we went for Garde - thats poor judgement not luck. Take note Tony. !!!

We both got relegated so its poor judgement by both!!

Why isn't Chris Houghton ever mentioned? He got Newcastle Promoted, he got Brighton to third which is way better than expected. I just don't understand? Give black mangers a chance, and we are club with a proud history of brining through black players in the early ages.

I can't help thinking if he was white he'd be getting mentions all the time....subconscious racism like Chris Rock said at the Oscars.

He seems a very obvious candidate starring us in the face.

What  has his colour got to do with anything?? Hughton has signed a new contract shall we go and try for Paul Ince or John Barnes? The only factor that should be considered is are they good enough for us and if you'd have read these boards Hughton has been mentioned loads and I'd say the press don't tout his name as he's signed a new contract apparently!! I don't want him because I think he's too nice and we have to many snakes at our club who need clearing out.

I think he's a technically pretty decent player and would likely bolster our midfield.  However, he's a horrible human being and I don't want him anywhere near Villa Park.

I guess stamping is OK as long as there's not a major fuss over it :D

I hate that argument of people knowing what a strangers like but have judged them on a few incidents in their life! Joey Barton had issues mainly drink related but if you've listened to him in the last few years he's matured massively as a person and player. Football is littered with men who act like kids. As for the stamping he never got done for it and there's hundreds of players who've done worse. Anyway he's gone to Rangers so no point in going on.

I will take any player who can improve our team. Even if I hate them for whatever reason I'd give them the chance to show what they've got. We need characters and leaders in our squad ASAP.

  19. 2 hours ago, bobzy said:

He hasn't grown up.  I don't know why people think this.

As earlier in this thread (probably - when discussing with Stevo) for example, he stamped on a Brighton player recently and then goaded opposition fans on Twitter with some nonsense comment about football not being bowls.  The guy is an absolute clown.

Actually, that quite suits Rangers I suppose.  Clown player at clown club, I like it.

So you agree that his footballing ability is good enough for us then but you just dislike his temperament? If fans slag players on Twitter they shouldn't moan if they get stuff back and as for the stamp I don't recall a major fuss over it and he wasn't sent off. He'll probably end up SPL player if the year next season.

  20. Surely we are doing the correct thing. Hollis by the sounds of things met Pearson and liked him so made him his choice. This shows Pearson was interested when we looked skint. Now we have a new owner and hopefully money to spend it opened the door to Moyes as he wanted funds. Nothing has been offered to anyone yet but surely it's better to speak to all parties first and then pick one. We are the biggest club Pearson will ever manage and I believe we are the biggest Moyes will be offered this summer. I've not mentioned RDM as I think he only get mentioned because he was manager when Chelsea win the CL and even though it wasn't them team he built who did it its on the CV so he'll always be linked with good jobs.

    Bullet.  Dodged.

I'd be willing to stake money on Barton getting a red card in every Old Firm game he plays this season.  Such passion*.

    * - read: 'passion' as 'a dickhead'.

Hasn't he just won the Championship with Burnley and was their player of the year and made the team of the season?? That's exactly the sort of dickhead as you put it we need in our team!! He has grown up loads in the last few years don't judge him past misdemeanours

I think everyone would doubt that, however this was Aston Villa under Randy Lerner. I would not rule anything out, and according to Hollis's review Almstadt and Fox left primarily due to our disasterous summer recruitment so I would not be entirely surprised if the entire process was a total shambles and far from what you would expect from a professional organisation.

They were sacked because we got relegated if Riley was so at fault he'd be gone by now aswell. It's not like we are signing anyone currently
