What I like about Di Matteo's work so far is that he's given us a spine to the team. Bringing in Gollini, Elphick, Tshibola and McCormack shows a good old-fashioned management style of reinforcing down the middle of the team and I like that. I think it shows a mentality of adding a bit of steel and hopefully we will see a Villa that has a more competitive edge about them, rather than the powder-puff showing that we had last season.

Just a factor that, if the good Doctor is worth £20bn, at an interest rate of 1% he will be spending something like a month's interest on McCormack. Not to say I am not grateful for McCormack but just putting it into perspective.

Jamie Vardy is 30 in January and in his last Championship season bagged 16 goals. McCormack might just have the same kind of hunger about him.

I think that would have been clearer to see had we not bid that amount on a day when we're looking at bringing the same amount in. Trying to get McCormack in would have been better for us earlier in the window as we could have used him in our pre-season so he could get used to his new surroundings and hit the ground running when the season started. It's not like we're a team blessed with the art of hitting the back of the net. If Xia thinks he will get Villa back into the Premier League without spending a decent amount on new players, in my opinion, he's going to have a rude awakening. That's not me saying he doesn't have money, it's me saying that Villa were terrible last season and balancing the books to try to get us back up will probably not work. But, I hope to be proved wrong.

My problem with this is why wait until a few days before the season starts to make an offer? It makes me worry that RDM had to sell before he could buy, which doesn't sort of fit in with a wealthy owner image, does it? One other thing, I hope we don't stop at McCormack because we need someone to supply him with chances and that's been a problem of ours for quite some time.

With the current squad I'd expect a us to be as bad as last season, which would probably have us in the bottom half all season but just not bad enough to go down again. With 3-4 decent signings that go straight into the first team, I could see us in the top half with a challenge for the play-offs.

You only have to look at that despairing lunge that he made in Ireland's second game to see how terribly slow he is. He runs like a tortoise towing an elephant. Even in the average quality Championship he's going to be found wanting. At least Baker's had some time down at this level to know what to expect. Having said that about Baker, I would still like to see a replacement for Clark.

£5m is hilarious. I would rip their hands off for that price. Not only will that be good money in the bank for us it will also weaken them defensively if they play him!
