  1. It's an odd Desire love in, mainly due to the impact the phone made when it arrived at the beginning of the year, the first real iphone killer. The hardware is inferior to the Galaxy S in pretty much every way. Much of the harware advantages though will only become important as the phone ages and more cpu hungry apps come about. Though I've read plenty of reviews that have Galaxy S as the best phone. All reviews I've read say the Galaxy S is totally unrivalled as a media player, which nobody would really argue with. The problem with lots of the reviews for Desire are they're all old from Feb or March when it was a jaw dropper. The reviews are dated now. But all the little drawbacks of the Galaxy S are almost all down to software, Galaxy S is still on a bit buggy 2.1 software which is ok because they promised to fix it all with the 2.2 update which is mere weeks away. This is pretty much confirmed by the 2.2 froyo build leaks that people have tested. So you'd hope good reviewers would go back and redo the reviews once the 2.2 software is out. Techradar are the worst though, they love HTC and are obviously biased against everything else, they had so many complaints about their N8 review they changed it. They have the tag line on their desire review "the most powerful android phone ever" yet that's not even close to true anymore. I had a choice between X10 and Desire and picked the X10 for it's screen and camera (though Sony as useless with the software updates). The Galaxy S is that much better than both that I bought a Galaxy S 3 months after buying my X10. The proof is in the pudding, people are leaving Desires to get Galaxy S'. The fact Samsung managed to sell 5mil phones in about 10 weeks says it all about its popularity. Also Galaxy S is still better than the yet to be released Desire HD on hardware and screen. GPU is still twice as good in the Galaxy S as the Desire HD. Desire HD is just a European release of the Evo.
  2. Some very useful apps all organised in this thread worth a look.
  3. Here we disagree, the reduced weight is right up my street. When I first handled my friends galaxy s, I was like "wow that's so light." They deliberately went for plastic to make it light and I'm glad they did. The weight is a selling point to me and obviously many people too. While the build quality is excellent, regardless of the materials. Weight gives it a premium feel? So added weight is now a selling point. Baffling but true. You got to decide is the plastic build worth it for the phone with the best hardware and best screen of any phone in the world?
  4. I have to say the little ridge on the back at the bottom is genius. Whoever developed that earned his pay. Combined with the phones super light weight I can put my index finger on the back at the ridge and my thumb on the front at the bottom and the phone is held secure and balanced. Now when I pull the phone out of my pocket, I can pinch at the ridge and swivel the phone round so it's the right way up facing me. It's the little things like this that I really like. Oh and one drawback of the galaxy s, no notification led, is solved by the amazingly useful noLED app, a must get dirk. While textdroid is better than cabbage for using your free web texts.
  5. YYeah Chindie a few people and reviewers have said that about the Galaxy S, it feels plasticy and doesn't feel as solid because it's so light. People are used to the 140g aluminium smartphone that a departure to a 110g plastic one feels like a cheap knock off almost. Personally having only had my first smartphone the X10 for a few months the weight of it was a bit of a problem for me, so the lower weight of the Galaxy S was something that I liked. But people who have had iPhones or Desires etc.. may be used to the 140g weight and think the Galaxy S is too light, hence what some reviewers said. But think of it like this, Samsung went to great lengths to get it this light and they did it with the hands down king of cpu gpu combo's. This is my first samsung phone and to say I'm happy with it is an understatement. It was god enough to make me dutch a brand new xperia x10 after only a few months. But the beauty of android is choice. I'm going one of my friends gets the desire hd as I'd really want to have a play around with it.
  6. Now this is cool. I downloaded PSx4droid the Playstation emulator, got the .bin file and downloaded FF7 Rom. I've ordered a Zeemote for a tenner from Amazon. Shortly I'll be doing Oh tv out on a Galaxy S, how I love thee.
  7. I use google chrome at home as it was faster than the version of IE I had.

This is true, it all depends on how fresh the keg is. I had a very good pint of guinness in courtown actually.
  9. I love the android browser, no point getting a different one. The browser in 2.2 is supposed to be the fastest around.

Who gives a **** about the marketing. Guinness is piss everywhere bar a few pubs in Dublin. The reason, bar sells a good pint of Guinness means they sell lots of pints, they sell lots of pints they have fresh kegs of Guinness all the time, Guinness loses its creaminess over time. Meaning if you get regular deliveries of Guinness from the brewery down the road you'll have the best Guinness. Also just because something is local brewed doesn't mean it's great. Lots of local brewed beers are average at best, there are some gems. Oh and we have plenty of local beers, a chain of pubs called The Porter House in Dublin scour the country for local beers and only sell micro brewed beers, stouts and ales. Some real gems there. Also most bars sell imported beers from Europe, I personally love Budvar, Spaten, and Leffe to name a few. I couldn't care what they did when making it if it tastes good.

There's only a few bars in Dublin that do good Guinness. Most serve crap.

I think all the ale and bitter you get in England is piss.
  13. First thing you need to do is take the iPhone 4 back and tell them you want a Samsung Galaxy S Download Angry Birds and clear your schedule. Sorted.

This, every bar in dublin will have heineken, coors, carlsberg, guinness, miller, bud, bulmers and smithwicks, with stella, paulaner and staropramen in most pubs too. Then the selection of bottled beers is huge too.
  15. I'm at it now Brian, (the magic of the smartphone) having a beer before heading back to work. My building is the big aib building that overlooks the oktoberfest. Now that we're nationalized we're working like public servants. I'll be back over a about five.

To be fair we have a very good selection of beers on offer in Dublin. In the uk it's cheaper but you're stuck drinking the shame shit all the time. You have bars with twenty different beers on tap over here and then a huge selection of large bottles. It's great. But still it's expensive, though prices are coming down in many bars, harbor master in ifsc is €4 a beer, O'Reillys is €3.60 which is equally to just over £3. Guinness is €4.10 in (£3.50) most places I drink it.
  17. I got 50 great curries of india in Easons, has a dvd which was helpful too.
  18. I was thinking the same thing myself. That's why I stick to the ground now. But I'm sure when cleaned well and not letting the coffee or spices linger too long it's fine. Oh and something I figured out recently, (as in on sunday) never marinade chicken in low fat yogurt, the whole thing will taste bitter. Use greek yogurt or full fat like all the recipe books say, natural yogurt that tastes good on its own. Anyway I'm going to try making butter chicken this weekend if I can find katuri methi (died fenugreek leaves). Otherwise I might give that beef rendang a go, I haven't done it in awhile and it's seriously tasty. Oktoberfest and then the match tonight so might be a bit tender tomorrow. Hmmm

 Aye, €3.60 a pint all day every day. Used to be €3.40
  20. Actually, probably not the best place for spices
  21. I haven't had fajitas in ages. Might make some this weekend. Personally I go through phases of different foods and try perfect a few dishes and then move on to something else. I was cooking italian for most of this year, I've never made so many sauces, perfected some really nice ones. Posted my favourite in this thread somewhere. Back on curries now.
  22. No. No, really, don't do that. Especially if you've invited people round. EDIT: Totally didn't get that. Indeed, spices in the bowel is bad enough when digested..
  23. Fantastic beef rendang Don't bother with the salad, and you can eat with normal basmati rice. My lord is this tasty when the beef is cooked right.
  24. Also Brian, best curry book of them all. 50 Great Curries of India by Camellia Panjabi. I have about 15 curry cookbooks and this is the best by a distance. The first half explains why every ingredient is used, so you know that fennel or tamarind or yoghurt are all souring agents, while onions, coconut milk etc.. are thickening agents. From the knowledge gained reading you can come up with the blend that suites you best. Hence I love my own curries more than any.
