Yeah, it’s clear we’re massively lacking squad depth, but you know we’re only in our second year back, we’ve made steady progress, and it’s something we can rectify in the summer.
In a sense we’ve done the hard work, which was staying up the first year and kicking on.
The summer should (fingers crossed) be slightly easier, in that we don’t need massive player turnover.
What development did you see today then?
I agree that a draw against Everton is a decent result, but the quality on both sides was…..less than exceptional. I don’t think the players or fans can take much from that.
I get that, but you are investing in players that you hope will make extra cash down the line by increasing the squad quality and depth in following seasons. Or if we end up selling him, first team minutes could increase experience and value.
It's interesting how things evolve and circle back to ‘old fashioned’ tactics.
I was looking at Chelsea v Arsenal the other day and both teams played a back three, with wingbacks for width, two DMs, and two AMs forming a square with one up top.
Got me thinking that could really work for us with a slight tweak, and a new DM.
Also, that there is only one thing that matters, old fashioned or new, and that is that it works.
Would anyone take Tammy as a loan with option to buy?
If he’s that desperate to get out of Chelsea it might suit everyone, as we could see if we can accommodate him, Chelsea could perhaps increase his value if he has a good season and we don’t exercise the option. Plus we don’t have to shell out loads of money on him this season helping our FFP.
Seems a possible way forward to me.
I’d have to agree about Tammy. I think he’s a great player, but that the ship has sailed with him. As you say, if we didn’t have Ollie i’d be all for it, but I wouldn’t want to drop him for Tammy.
We desperately need a dm who can initiate attacks and provide protection for the back 4.
There are pages of discussions on this thread which have gone in to why Nakamba isnt that, and why Luiz, as good as he is, is not a proper DM. Playing 3 midfielders as 8’s doesn’t provide balance and makes us vulnerable to teams fielding advanced midfielders.
You sort of answered the question though, as we need a rethink of the team structure in the middle to address this balance.
Doesn’t need to change the winger style, would actually complement it.
Weren’t people saying last season that Targett wasn’t good enough at this level?
Given time to settle and improve and he’s been one of our best players this season.
We’ll see Sanson improve next season. I have no doubt at all.
