    I thought he looked a shadow of himself for much of the first half. Maybe the goal helps going forward. He needs some swagger.

    It’s pretty clear to me that we need to find ways of optimising the time we have the ball in the areas where our strengths lie. We need better ball retention in the final third and someone who can bring in our quality wide players. Kane was dropping deep to try and help, but he’s no false 9. Mount for all his strengths was not helping in this regard. We were hitting him long and he was not winning any 50-50’s. Jack would have really helped there.

    So is it about winning or performance? I re-read your posts about 10 times and I’m still not sure what you are saying. You said you cannot make mistakes (ie losing) but say that we need to find balance in the team during the group stages. If you do the latter you risk the former. I’m not saying we should be happy clapping that performance, but maybe, just maybe we can find solace in the fact we **** Won?

    So what you are saying is one mistake and you are out. As in results are key. I agree. We won.

    If this was a Villa game, there would be just the same level of vitriol. Just the same. While I get the criticism of the performance, no one can enjoy a win anymore, for club or country. Honestly i’m sick to death of negativity, regardless of how justifiable (or otherwise) it may be.

    Subs will play a massive part in the tournament though. If you only build chemistry in the starting 11, and we then have to deviate from it later, you are no better off. Rotation will feature throughout the tournament in every team.

    At least let’s wait and see. With respect, only on villatalk can a win generate so much hate. I’m not pretending we played well, but at least we’re going into the next game in control of the group, and not absolutely having to win.

    There is an obvious rebuttal to that, even if I agree with you. The team was selected based on the opposition. It worked. Different opposition, different team selection.

    Well i’m going to try and be balanced here and say that it was clearly a below par performance, but we have room to improve and the players to improve. France looked rubbish in their first world cup game in 2018, but grew exponentially through the tournament. We were lucky to win imo, but on a positive note, we hardly ever win our first game, and if we can secure qualification next game we can focus on performance.

    I think the only thing that baffles me is that it’s obvious that our defence is our weakpoint, and that we have one of the best attacking lines, yet we play defensively. It’s like we’re doing half of the oppositions work for them.

    We need Foden on the ball with space in front of him. He can creat havok but they’ve cut out all supply.
