    With respect, some people impatiently saying that Smith better have some plans up his sleeve are a bit unfair given that he’s lost his best player so late in the day. All of preseason preparation will have been done with Grealish available. He’s been proper dropped in the shit by this. That said, I fully expect him to defy his critics, as he always has done.

    We weren’t talking about them replacing Jack 24 hours ago. People were drawing up lineups with all 4 in, including Jack. Window closes Aug 31. Season kicks off next week. Any signing that comes in will not have a preseason, or any time with the team. If they flop we’ll be ‘give them time to bed in’, which is fine, and true, but it WILL compromise our success.

    I’m smelling a lot of ‘if’ there, given the stage of the preseason we’re at. As it stands if Jack leaves we are substantially weaker than last year, and kick off is next week. Our CM really worries me at the moment. If Southampton reject our JWP bid outright, what then? We’ll be outgunned in midfield against quite a lot of the other teams in this league.

    One thing I’ve come to realise over the last 24 hours is that to break into the top 6 you need to do it quickly, ideally in one season. Go from obscurity to renown in one season. You can’t do it slowly, cos your team will be picked apart before you get there, and before your club gains enough credibility to attract world class talent. It’s a rigged game, and frankly after this summer i’m a millimetre away from walking away from football for good.
