I get what you are saying, but again Young managed it, and he’s not Usain Bolt these days.
Targett was great last season, so I don’t accept that he’s shit now all of a sudden. The problems he faced last season he faced today, except last season he coped, and today he didn’t. Hard to see how that can be down to anything except either fitness, or psychology.
Yeah but Young is 36 and managed it. It’s not necessarily about outplaying him, it’s about nullifying him. God had the pace of a large cathedral, but his positioning was such that he was always where he needed to be to snuff out the threat.
Targett’s head had gone after 10 mins.
In fairness the whole ‘set up wrong from the start’ thing is only a part of the problem.
Sarr undid us by slaughtering Targett, but if we’re honest we’d all have started him. We could not have predicted that he’d be so off the pace given his performances last season.
Without Sarr, regardless of how cack we played we would have got something today.
Moneyball can never work in football because of the number of variables involved. There are more potential decisions made and actions undertaken during a match than there are stars in the universe.
Agreed about full backs, but I don’t think the problem is talent. Fitness and mental resilience. Get Targett a bloody performance coach/psychologist, cos he shat himself today.
Fitness fitness fitness. Looked like we had a shit preseason, and we did. Dropped in it during the last two weeks.
We always said it eould be a tough start because of it, and that we wouldn’t see the best of our team for at least a month. So it seems.
That said, we have been banging on about the midfield since before the end of last season, and we’ve been fannying about buying forward players.
**** bite the bullet and buy a bastard midfielder.
