But here's the thing that makes no sense. They built a three line defence on the left bank of the Dnipro in anticipation of the retreat. That made perfect sense because you wouldn’t want Ukraine to just be able to cross the river as that would just give them very easy access to Crimea and above everything, Crimea is the most important part of Ukraine for Russia, if they lose Crimea, Putin might as well put a gun to his own head. But they don't really appear to have been defending the Left bank, it’s a really odd thing to do. Build a series of defensive lines and then don't defend them. It’s giving Ukraine access to the pumping stations that push the canal water out to Crimea.
It seems like Ukraine were just allowed to walk across the river by the remains of the Antonovsky Bridge (that’s how the Russians got out) into Oleshky, there were no Russians there. The locals were reporting this to the Ukraine Government for a couple of days.
I can see the Spit and some of those places being weakly defended but two of these locations are literally straight across the river and one of them is the most obvious place to defend and…. Nothing, nada. It just makes no sense
