Ah so we should allow them to work whilst their claim is processed? The country has a shortage of people prepared to do low skilled low paid work. The reason they add little to the economy, is that we don't allow them to add to the economy. So blaming asylum seekers for adding little to the economy is a bit stupid when they aren't allowed to. The reason they aren't allowed to? Because that would blur the lines between economic migration and asylum. (according to the Home Office) So if you accept that, you're down to being against people risking their lives crossing the channel in small boats and I think we probably all agree that should be stopped. Making it illegal won't stop it. They already did that and look what happened. The solution isn't contained in this new law.

It isn't as clear cut as that. Russia has three times the population as Ukraine but Ukraine only has 3.5% of Russia's land mass. The Russian landmass needs far more people to make it work as a country than Ukraine does. Ukraine also hasn't quite suffered the brain drain that Russia has. SOmewhere between 1 and half a million men of conscript age has just buggered off out of Russia in the last year, and Russia was already suffering a working age intellectual deficit as thanks for it educating its people highly. All sorts of other factors also come into play but just comparing population sizes really isn't the answer to the question.
