  1. It's an interesting look at how the baseball way back then was really just a relaxed, pastoral game, not a really competitive sport.

  3. Each of these teams must all think they have a good chance of winning this group.
  4. Encouraging display by Los Yanquis yesterday. Several delicious passes from Michael Bradley, and 2 goals from Altidore, finally.
  5. Not strong enough, apparently. I'd absolutely love it if Argentina and England played each other after this little outburst.
  6. Brooklyn / Los Angeles Dodgers Philadelphia / Oakland Athletics Did the Atlanta Braves develop from the Boston Braves? Yup, Boston, then they moved to Milwaukee, and finally Atlanta. My uncle used to go to Braves games at Braves Field cuz tickets were much cheaper than at Fenway.
  7. Another lie, I started this damn thread! Consider this thread Operation Iraqi Freedom
  8. I get what you mean. Charlie Watts is a great example of a drummer you don't "hear", but without Charlie, the Rolling Stones would have been a totally different kind of band. I agree with you about Keith Moon. I'd also put Stewart Copeland in that class. They put his drumming way upfront on their recordings and it worked. I don't know how he got his snare so tight without the thing shredding off. He's a supremely tasteful drummer, IMO.
  9. WICKED And sad, because she could have gone on to do anything. And probably would have moved on from some of that sappy stuff
  10. You would think that WW2 would have provided a lasting lesson on the ultimate futility of empire building. A lesson tragically lost on American Cold Warriors.
  11. Disagree - Lerner doesn't seem to be a vain individual whatsoever (evidenced by the fact that he doesn't like the limelight at all) and I think he bought the club because he was genuinely interested in it at the time. But going from genuine interest to not showing up to watch a match in person for months on end suggest that maybe the thing WAS a vanity pursuit. Once things got tough, he couldn't be bothered.
  12. So I know I'm picking a fight here, but there have been a few people that have suggested that the Americans entered into WW2 at the very end, and are attributed all the plaudits for saving Europe, etc. But if we look at the dates, we see that it's simply not true. The war started in 1939, UK officially entered in September 1939 The war ended in 1945 Americans officially entered the war in December 1941, if we don't include arms shipments and intelligence missions which were already underway. I've read on here that the USA is the Ole Gunner Solskjaer of combatants (showing up in the 90th minute), which is funny, but just not true. We'd have to be considered a late first half substitution if we use football metaphors. Also, in terms of troop casualties, lives lost were roughly equal on both sides (UK/US). I agree that Hollywood has always made the Americans look like saviors at the expense of accurately portraying the valiant efforts of British and all Commonwealth troops, as well as the Soviet troops. But I've noticed there is a tendency (maybe as a backlash to Hollywood) to downplay the significance and impact of American involvement in the war, even to the point of suggesting we kind of just showed up at the very end. It ain't true.
  13. One last mission for the old duffer
  14. Could have done without the Prince Charles bit though
  15. It would be great if this was the same guy who escaped the nursing home!
  16. Call me crazy, but I really think this England team could do something special in Brazil. They have some real quality, a good blend of youth and experience, and what seems to be a much more relaxed buildup than in tournaments past. Nobody expects much of them. But I think they'll do very well this time.
  17. So when is this ready to start? NVM, I saw the post
  18. i like this. But maybe swap wilshere and lallana's positions and put steeling on for wilshere. I still want to see what Sterling can do playing behind 2 strikers for England I think Roy wants Rooney on the left wing and Sturridge alone up front.
  19. I can't help but fear that between the corruption and ineptitude of the Brazilian government, the Brazilian FA and FIFA, critical things may be glossed over. Like stadium safety.
  20. He was in tears, seemed to know his fate. Very sad.
