What is sad and scary is that the default setting of US foreign policy in the Muslim world is military action, it matters not that the sitting US president is a Noble Peace Prize winner (cough).... It shows a staggering lack of imagination that the best efforts our diplomats put forth inevitably results in a capitulation to the military industrial complex, which has a big boner right now. Yes, what ISIS has been doing is diabolical, but what of the wholesale rape and slaughter of African civilians in CAR, DRC, Sudan, etc.? The West's response to these various crises seems arbitrary and reactionary, and one can't help but think it's just war games and political posturing.

I think if you make any changes, maybe add 2 points for correct goal difference. So if you predict 0-0, and the score is 1-1 or 2-2, you get 2 points...dunno if thats a big pain in the ass to do though.

I think for the US in this instance, its damned if you do, damned if you dont. I agree with Peter to the extent that The US should have tried to finesse the situation more to try and get an all Arab response together while avoiding having to drop any bombs themselves. But that was never giing to happen. As it stands, there is a broad coalition of countries that is participating directly and indirectly, and a number of those states are Arab. I think the last foreign conflict the US had a moral obligation to persue wasWW2. ISIL comes pretty close to being as obviously diabolical as the Nazis, whose defeat was also in everyones best interest.

I cant recall where I saw that syria gave the ok for bombing. It was a credible source though, or i wouldnt have repeated it. I think its highly probable that the US has had talks with the Assad regime, either directly or through an intermidiary, despite what they say. In any event, Assad has not denounced it, as far as i know. And he shouldnt, because bombing IS helps him.

Somewhat OT, but 3 Afghan army officers being trained on a Cape Cod army base walked off the base Saturday night and haven't been seen since...considering the number of incidents where Afghan soldiers have betrayed their American and British "partners", this is somewhat worrying, but it's being pretty much buried in US news for some reason.
