Interesting Athletic article. It is fascinating to watch the sport evolve over these last several years. I like the tactical considerations and the competitive impetus that drives progressive innovation in the sport. But I can't help but notice that when you slow the game flow down when you step on the ball, you are effectively creating a set piece, which is what gridiron football is all about. Set piece after set piece, and having a planned sequence from each set piece. So while I find this trend interesting, I also think it goes against the essence of football, which is improvisation. I understand the reasons why it "works", but is it good for the game?
