Sadly, it kind of makes sense, objectively speaking. I'm certain nobody wants to part with him. But the club is handcuffed and backed into a corner in terms of these compliance parameters and a very hard decision will be made. Of the players that would command top dollar, he's probably the most expendable, and that's no disrespect to Jacob. There are other important players that Emery and Monchi would be less willing to part with, like Torres, Luiz, Watkins, Kamara and Martinez, among a few more.
It's possible they've been spooked by Diaby's overall lack of production and would listen to offers. The fact that Bailey owns that position might make selling Diaby a little easier. But I think this is unlikely.
As an academy player, selling Ramsey would be pure profit, and they may have legitimate concerns about his durability. And it should be noted that we've stormed the league this season playing mostly without him. We'll have Buendia and Rogers who can slot into a quasi-Ramsey role next season, softening the blow somewhat.
The time was always going to come when the club would need to sell a highly regarded player or more if we were going to be on an ascendent trajectory. Being compelled to do so by league bylaws probably wasn't how anyone envisioned this playing out, but here we are.
I sincerely hope he isn't moved on and that we can generate an equivalent sum of money by selling Digne and Coutinho to Saudi League and MLS respectively, turning some kind of profit on Duran and convincing Chambers to pack his bags.
