As an American myself, I was attracted to world football precisely because it is NOT a closed exhibition style system. The notion that Scunthorpe United could conceivably win promotion all the way up to the Premier League through acumen and endeavor is at the heart of the vast majority of soccer leagues outside of MLS. That teams are where they are along the ladder on merit. That they qualify for cup tournaments based on results, not a fixed franchise scheme that guarantees their position forever. How boring! It's what makes relegation battles so compelling. In the USA, teams near the bottom of their divisions just go through the motions for up to months at a time, knowing nothing will happen one way or the other.

Just saw this news. Absolutely disgusted. The backlash will be severe, it already is, and I don't think it will happen. But if it does, the English clubs who leave should be banned from ever coming back, and they will eventually want to. I'm embarrassed that half the owners of the English want-aways are American. As if news of the world these days isn't already bad enough, and that smaller clubs in lower leagues aren't already on the brink. This is just sick.
