    I knew Paul Mariner. He was an occasional bar customer of mine in Boston while he was a match commentator for New England Revolution. Pleasant enough guy. We talked football. Last time I saw him I was working at a different bar and he was with his TV partner, a smug American dickhead who I ended up kicking out of the bar that night for being an insulting smug dickhead who wasn't getting his way. Mariner left with him. Sad that that was how it was left. 68 is way too young these days. Life is unfair.

    I've often wondered if there is someone at the club who tells the kit maker that the socks have to be blue, etc. I want the black socks Villa wore back in mid century days. Looks killer.

    It's an interesting conundrum. He is clearly adept at getting his teams to advance deep into tournaments. So by that measure, he is doing quite the opposite of holding the team back. Stylistically however, yes, the argument can be made that he's handcuffed the most creative group of players England have ever had. But ultimately what is more important, results, or artfulness?

    A link to a story about England fans assaulting a Danish family is worth mentioning on here, probably. It's a headline in the news today. It doesn't seem like any begrudgement (I made this word up) is going on here. Obviously the vast majority of England fans are a credit to the nation, as are the players. Even Safegate. I'll be rooting for you guys, anyway!
