  1. Case in point. Despised his own handsome features and he wanted to look white. Actually, @foreveryoung, the spectre of racism does hang over some of this. British colonial racism, American racism. Capitalist marketing just exploited it.
  2. I think it is very true with some people, not all. I think some Indian people in India in particular have internalized messaging that white skin is better than brown skin. Eyelid surgery is a huge industry in East Asia for similar reasons. Hair straightener in Africa. And the tanning bed industry for white people is part of the same phenomenon. Taking measures that often times carry risk of injury or disease to appear different to your regular everyday natural appearance.
  3. Chillax bro Someone mentioned Asian actors changing their appearance to be more "bankable", other people commented on that and so did I. Have I struck a nerve with you?
  4. It's not "racism" driving these industries, it's profit. Through their messaging they tell us that who we are isn't good enough. It's basic marketing. In northern Europe you think you "look good" when your skin is darker because of the messaging. In South Asia, you think you look good when your skin is lighter because of messaging. FWIW, I agree that a suntan looks good on normally pale skin, so I've bought into the message as well!
  5. Just finished episode 1 of We Own This City and it's as good as I hoped it might be so far. It doesn't spell everything out for you and it's smart. Excellent successor to the Wire as far as I can tell after the first episode.
  6. Yeah, all you have to do is take a pinch of salt with the info. It's honestly better than nothing, and he's a decent guy.
  7. The point is to attempt, through marketing and messaging, to make the consumer feel insecure about what they look like. "Too pale", "too dark", "hair too kinky", etc.
  8. Do you really think that these multi billion dollar industries don't use psychological manipulation to market and sell their products? It's fundamental to most if not all marketing. You make someone feel bad about what they don't have and then you sell it to them.
  9. It's fascinating to me that there's billions of dollars in skin whitening cream, suntan lotion, tanning beds, hair straighteners, hair curlers, wigs, extensions, eyelid surgery and lip fillers, all sold to people trying to look like another ethnicity. Much less money to be made off of self-acceptance than self-hatred.
  10. It's probably time to just call it what it is. It's a war zone. The country is at war with itself. Some of it is random spasms of gun violence, but it is increasingly shaded by politics. The killer today is a Trump fanatic apparently. Highland Park is a liberal town with a large Jewish population. A tempting target for a MAGA killer. He probably thought he'd be a hero like Rittenhouse. Why wouldn't he think that? What I fear now is an armed Lefty shooting up a group of Right wingers and then an increasing tit for tat. There is a photo out there of an elderly man at the parade with his entire head blown apart and a massive pool of blood.Children witnessed it. People running for their lives. "Freedom".
  11. I agree. The psychological rot is really ingrained there now. So many players have no pride. And the players who do put in the effort are selfish, whinging moaners.
  12. Sorta feel bad for Brentford as they took the initial big risk.
  13. Apparently there's been a change in plans. The initial plan was to build the new stand behind the current one and then swap them out upon completion. That is not happening. There will be a tear down of the NS and a rebuild on the spot, meaning a major disruption to STH there and a major eyesore for the bulk of two seasons.
  14. I'd love it if we didn't have a shirt sponsor.
  15. I would like Aston Villa FC to sign a player transfer.
  16. Yes, the Dutch are extremely matter of fact. No superfluous chitter chatter.
