You are limiting yourself in a terrible way, Jim. There are so many fantastic US microbreweries that put many European beers to shame, frankly.
in my local off license they sell 3 american beers, bud, coors and miller, coors for me is the best of them, the sort of beer you have when you get back from work and fancy a drink but dont want to get smashed, but in my local supermarket they sell samuel adams and brooklyn brewery lager that for me are quite forgettable, ive been to a few beer festivals in london where they do a lot of american beers that are quite similar, none stand out as a "perfect" beer
the american sky vodka on the other hand - beautiful drop of stuff that
Sam Adams and Brooklyn, along with Anchor Steam are kind of the "Oldie" microbrews, and you're right, they are nothing particularly special. Miles ahead of the Bud/Coors/Miller piss though. There is a really great brewery here in Massachusetts called "Pretty Things", and they make world class beers. Another top notch brewery is Goose Island, out of Chicago. Smuttynose from New Hampshire, Lagunitas from California, just to name a few...If you can get your hands on any of these, you'll see what I mean.
