I think I fell in love today. I was watching a women's park league football match, and while the standard of play wasn't particularly good, there was a midfield player for one team who was just dominating...and stunningly gorgeous to boot. Twice she stole the ball, eluded a defender and whipped in a couple of absolute missiles for crosses....nobody close to getting a head or foot on them, of course, but no fault of hers...

When I was a little kid, my best friend down the street came from a strict Catholic family. Sunday School, "CCD" (after school indoctrination), framed pictures of the Pope and our local Cardinal in their house. My parents thankfully did not raise us religious, and as a consequence, the whole idea of religion seemed idiotic to me. I held some sway over my friend and his sister down the street, and one day I thought it would be funny to convince them to yell over and over "I hate you, God!" out in front of their house Needless to say, I wasn't allowed around their place for a while...

It's full blown Darwinism over here. Except that the rules are rigged to benefit the few that have made it to the top or were born at the top. For most Americans, social mobility means you're moving down, not up. "Hope and Change".

17 or 18. He had a long and happy life, so what more can you do? So many animals are abused and neglected, but Winston had it made. I only wish he didn't suffer so much this past few days, but I can't dwell on that. He's off to the great big tunafish platter in the sky

Thanks NV, and thanks Morpheus for your kind words. Winston started to really suffer yesterday, so I had him put down today instead. It's surreal somehow. But he's not suffering anymore, so I guess I can take solace in that. Still, he was such a great character and a reliable pal. Mixed feelings, really.

This is the balancing act I find myself doing right now. It's hard to know how much pain he's in as opposed to him just getting old and creaky. His lack of interest in food is probably the biggest indicator that he's preparing himself for the big exit. I'm having a veterinarian stop by on Monday to size him up. Hopefully he doesn't try to sell me on the $1K "Keep Him Alive Special"...

My buddy of 17 years, Winston the cat is on his last legs It's very sad to see him progressively deteriorate...he was once an eating champion, now for the last few days, he hardly goes near his food bowl. He doesn't greet me at the door anymore because he's so hobbled. So I'm preparing myself for the inevitable. If it gets to the point where he can't walk in a straight line or is just not getting up, I'll have him put down. No sense having him suffer. You don't realize how attached you've become to the little critters until they are close to death. Sad days ahead.
